"it rotates on its own axis at the same speed that it orbits the earth. leaving one side always facing us" - The preposition is not true. The OP forgot to mention that the moon is revolving around earth in a non-circular path. Meaning there should come a time when a different side of the moon should face earth but it doesn't happen. It's like there is a magnet on the moon that faces earth and this is the reason why only one side of the moon is always facing earth.

I am sorry, but you are wrong about the "Dark side of the moon receiving just as much light as the side that faces us" - this is a common error that is often stated but can easily be disproven/corrected with simple logic.

Firstly the statement is partially correct, the moon is tidally locked with one side facing our planet, and the other (the dark side) permanently facing away from our planet, and consequently on average both sides of the moon receive approximately the same amount of direct light from the Sun, but this only tells part of the story.

The error is the assumption that the moon receives all light directly from the sun - this is simply not true, a significant proportion of the light that falls on the moon is light that has reflected off our planet (plus a small amount of light generated either artificially, or through natural means such as volcanic eruptions, lightening etc)- Earthlight, and Earthlight only falls on the near side of the moon.

Given direct sunlight is evenly distributed evenly over the lunar surface, and earthlight only falls on the near side (no Earthlight falls on the dark side of the moon) the net result is a difference in the amount that falls on each side - without question the near side of the moon is illuminated with light compared to the dark side (illumination from other stars and planets is insignificant and evenly distributed over the lunar surface).l
