How To Make A Two Way Mirror
In this video, I'm going to take you through 3 simple methods for making your own, and how to avoid mistakes that waste a ton of time and material.
I’ll outline exactly what you’ll need, how to use it, and I’ll leave you detailed step-by-step instructions down below.
Method #1: Applying Film To Glass & Acrylic
You can turn ordinary glass and acrylic into a two way mirror by applying transparent mirror film, also known as two way mirror film.
A window film installation kit from your local hardware store can be used for application and to smooth out the bubbles.
I’ll leave you a link below to my complete step-by-step instructions and tips on how to add privacy to your windows.
Two Way Mirror Film also allows you to create curved surfaces, for exhibits, costumes, and vehicles.
It’s important to use a high quality directional two way mirror film if you’re looking for full privacy.
Most cheap window films are far too transparent to work even in ideal lighting conditions.
Method #2: Stretching Film Across A Frame
If you’re looking to create a lightweight two way mirror, the film can be stretched and pulled tight on a frame.
By affixing it with equal tension on all sides, it makes a huge two way mirror.
This is perfect for theater performances, magic shows, and any application where you need a giant lightweight mirror.
It can even be bent to make a curved two way mirror with careful tension and framing.
After it's attached to your frame, you can use a heat gun around the edges to tighten it.
Method #3: Silver Nitrate
Also known as silvering, a thin layer of silver nitrate solution can be applied to the surface of glass to create a two way mirror. Installation kits can be found online.
The more silver nitrate that’s applied to the glass, the more reflective and less transparent it gets.
It’s important to read all safety instructions when working with chemicals, use gloves, and work in a well ventilated area.
For this reason, it’s recommended to avoid the silver nitrate method and simply use film instead.
Quality
A lot of people ask, what's the difference between a homemade two way mirror and purchasing a glass two way mirror?
Two way mirror glass is manufactured with a multilayer process in a vacuum chamber.
It has a dielectric layer that enhances reflection, prevents tarnishing, and improves durability.
