When I was a kid in the early 80s, we lived down the road from a Greek family. One year they brought the granny over. She wore black with a black headscarf and had no English. I went to a birthday party of the daughters, and not really knowing anyone, I loitered by the food because they kept bringing out these delicious hot tiny little garlicky meatballs. We didn’t eat garlic in my house in the 80s. I adored it though. Eventually I went into the kitchen, and granny was a one woman catering unit. I was watching what she was doing, and eventually she sat me down and roped me into making the meatballs with her. The 2 hours flew by. It was one of my favourite childhood memories despite not being able to share a language. And obviously I got a few extra garlicky treats in my party bag that the other kids didn’t get.

Feeding others is probably the purest form love can take

As a greek, when people come to my house and they tell me they're not hungry, I'm automatically offended. 😂

My grandma died when my dad was still very young. His best friend in school was greek, and the friend's mom insisted my dad comes over every day after school to eat because my grandpa was working a lot. She took him in like he was her own. My dad always spoke very highly of her. When my dad passed, his best friend and the mother of course were at the funeral too. I had never met this lady before, but when this short elderly lady walked up to me weeping in greek and just hugged me tight out of nowhere, I immediately knew. She was sobbing like she lost her own child, I will never forget the pain in her face. I unfortunately never got to see her again before she also passed, but I hope she was surrounded by only love and light because she was an incredible woman, that much I'm sure of. Not sure why I felt like sharing this under such a silly video, but the whole "insisting to feed a loved one" reminded me of her.

I am pregnant and need a Greek friend like this!!! Feed How lovely and wholesome. Food is a love language all in it's own.

When I was first married, my husband and I lived in an apartment building with Greek neighbors. As soon as the wife found out we had relocated to Los Angeles and had no family nearby, she would bring me over "leftovers" (which were clearly freshly cooked meals) every week. They were soooo good, and it was really sweet. They got a computer from their son and I would go over and show her how to write email. I never left without having to eat something. It was awesome.

As a Greek, I can confirm this is accurate. As a Pontic Greek specifically, I've heard stories here that during the war, in the past, soldiers would come to our villages, cause people, from different areas, told them "Pontic Greeks, in Macedonia, will feed you, no matter what, go to their villages". So hospitality and sharing is a sacred ritual. Hope our villages stay the same way, an oasis in a modern world that's falling apart. I'm going to cook now!❤

As a Greek citizen, I can confirm that you're
hungry, you will stay and you will eat.😂😊

Edit:So many likes and comments! Thank you, guys!!! 😊 🙏🏻
For us Greeks, it's an honour when someone visits our house and that's the reason why we all eat together! That's the Greek philoxenia(hospitality)!! Greetings from

I deeply appreciate how so many cultures in the world all agree that “You are here and I must now shower you with delicious food” is the correct response to company and showing love to them.
Something so human in an ancient way that’s rooted so deep in us as a species.

This is so true tho. When I was at school, any time I went to my Greek friend’s house, her mum would see me and yell “why you so skinny?!!” (I was a very fat kid) and promptly sit me down at the table and bring out all the moussaka and lamb chops and salads and what not. Then I’d eat and she’d smile all approvingly and ruffle my hair. Man, I loved that lady. She was so lovely. Greeks are such awesome people.

Greeks and southern hospitality have a lot in common, both center around family and food. You can never let a guest leave hungry, and you send them home with a doggy bag so they have lunch tomorrow! Food transcends language boundaries bc everyone has to eat. And give someone sustenance is one of the kindest things you can do
