GREAT tips and thanks for sharing! A produce guy at the market also told me that seedless melons tend to be a bit LESS sweeter than seeded varieties but at least there are virtually no pits to have to spit out with the seedless ones.

The best way is to bring a pocket knife with you . Pick out your watermelon, then with your pocket knife, cut a triangular plug about two🎉inches deep, stick the point of your knife into the rind and pull out the plug and taste it, if it’s good, you know what to do. If not, continue process until you are thrown out of the store .

Trying to determine ripeness by tapping on it is probably the hardest way because you're not sure what to listen for and the supermarket environment can be noisy. Another option might be to choose a few watermelons of the same size you think are good using the other techniques (yellow spot, brown stem, dull dark color, etc.) and then weigh each of them on a scale. The ripest melon will be heavier because it will have the most water inside.

You also want to choose one with a lot of the light brown ‘spidering’ lines running through the ground spot.

And look for seeded melon.
Seedless is GMO'd fruit.

my dad made this small device that fits his key chain and it allows him to sample melons, its like a large diameter needle basically a hollow 6mm tube a couple inches long with one end that is cut like the tip of a needle and on the other end it has an internal sliding latch kinda like that of a door lock, once inserted into the melon in question he twists and pulls it out then pushes on the latch and it shoves out the sample from the needle tip and he can taste it, if no good he simply puts the round rind piece back into the hole to cover it, , every one laughs in excitement at his ideas, i still have it with me and another key chain he made me which is a metal coin with some incoherent letters on both sides, the coin is on a spindle and once you spin it the letters become one as its spinning and reads "i love you" the girls at school all wanted him to make them one lol ahh my dearly departed dad miss you

But they won't tell you the most important one.

This video is very 'generic'. It is giving basically textual information with pictures that don't necessarily line up with what he is talking about. i.e. when you say "pick one dull in color" show what a dull looks like. Even better if you have the dull melon next to the a shiny bright under-ripe melon. When you describe what the thump should sound like-show us. Let us hear the difference. I'm pretty sure the voice is AI as well with the consistent rise in pitch in each sentence. LOL.

Can I purposely pick an unripe watermelon, store in fridge and eat it many days later until it is ripe? Or will it not ripe or doesn't taste as good since I chosen it unripe? (gonna buy many watermelons at a time and store some in fridge for later) also how long will a half cut watermelon last in fridge? thanjs

I have a fool proof way of picking a ripe sweet watermelon to eat. Go out somewhere and buy at least 10 watermelons, cut all of them open, taste each one and pic the sweetest to eat. Any other way of selecting a good watermelon is what we call old wives tales.
