You forgot to mention that the inventor of the concept got laughed at for years before he finally got a chance to prove himself and had an amazing "I told you" moment.

It also makes it harder to identify the type of ship, which can make it harder to estimate the range. Anything that slows down the enemy's reactions can save you.

Regular camouflage: I can't see it but I know where it is

Dazzle camouflage: I can see it but I don't know where it is

This interests me as a warhammer painter. Right now I am painting my models in a way to make the colors clash making them hard to look at for long periods of time with out eye strain. I feel like you've inspired me with this and for that thank you.

That’s how zebras work. The confusion of the stripes in the herd makes a difficult for predators to pick out one to chase and turn.

It’s especially helpful since there is no real way to hide when you’re always silhouetted against the horizon.

Dazzle camouflage is really the perfect name.

“Best camouflage they’d ever seen” what about the camouflage they didn’t see?

A lot of artists like Edward Wadsworth wanted to help the war effort and contributed to designing dazzle camouflage. Such an interesting use of art during wartime

What’s most impressive is that it’s design seemingly doesn’t the follow natural order of stillness but rather chaos

Car companies (at least in germany) use this on their new concepts, to still have it on the streets, as they figure out some last adjustments. The camouflage comes into play as they dont want the rivaling companies to figure out shapes and components

The Titanic’s sister ship the Olympic used this during WW1 while she was serving as a troop transport ship. She was the only civilian ship to sink an enemy during wartime. They intentionally rammed the Olympic into a German U-Boat preparing to fire on her. The ship’s size was able to create suction pulling the U-Boat into the hull and the propellers tore holes in the U-Boat sinking it. After the war it was discovered Olympic had been torpedoed but each torpedo that hit failed to detonate.

Every ship received a unique dazzle pattern, so no two dazzle camo ships looked the same!

Basically what you said at the end is really what camouflage is meant to do. Ghillie suits arent actually meant to make you practically invisible, its meant to break the silhouette of the normal human as to make you less noticeable to others.

This is largely the same idea as in individual camouflage uniforms. The pattern may vaguely resemble leaves and such, but the main intent is to break up the silhouette of the soldier, not disguise them as foliage.

If you didn't know, this is one of the reasons why zebras have stripes (the other main one is homeostasis, specifically thermal regulation)
