Phil of the Future Was WAY Ahead of Its Time... Literally

Phil of the Future was one of those special shows that doesn't take itself to seriously and treats it's world as a playground of fun ideas. So over the past couple years, I've rewatched Phil of the Future several times and since the Diffy Family is from the year 2121, what better year to cover the show, than 100 years prior to that future.

Thanks so much for watching! What were some of your favorite Disney Channel Live Action shows?

This show was the Pushing Daisies of the Disney Channel sitcoms - an excellent premise, characters you cared about, creative production design, and even though it only lasted two seasons, it ended on an emotional note and is downright unforgettable!

This show was fun and silly, but one of the best things about it is that it had no laugh track!
Seriously, those are the worst

It only ran for two years/42 episodes? Gosh, time flowed differently back then. I adored this show because it was generally very charming, but also because Alyson Michalka was my very biggest childhood crush, so it felt like a win when Phil and Keely kissed, because Phil was enough of an everyman to warrant the feeling of vicariousness.

The actor who played Phil’s father is a professor of acting at SCAD where I went to college

It’s amazing how rewatching the same shows watched as a kid makes one feel like that kid all over again. It brings you back to a much simpler time. Whenever I’m completely stressed & really need some escapism, nothing is better than watching your favorite shows as a kid. It does something to the brain I cannot explain.

I never even caught on that Curtis and the vice principal were the same actor! I'm glad JP Manoux was able to land on a more mainstream show like Community as he's such an amazing talent.

The Diffy's are so glad that they didn't get stuck in 2020

PotF has always stuck with me because of Phil's and Keely's relationship was always going to end in tragedy. And not a tragedy by poor character choices like in a lot of other shows, but a tragedy by circumstance. A life was always going to end, whether it was Phil's future life if he stayed, Keely's present life if she went with the Diffys, or the potential life Phil and Keely could share if they stayed together. And that was rather poignant for adolescent me.

thank you for clarifying that the mom originally did have a head on a robot body. I was convinced I must have halucinated that part of the original promo

I didn't even realize Evan Peters was in this.. and my god, this man doesn't age, he looks the exact same here as he does in Kick-Ass, and American Horror Story

Phil of the Future is still one of the all time best sitcoms in my opinion. It's a shame it got the short end of the stick in terms of finales. I would've loved to see if they ever made it back or got stuck in another wrong point in time.

I loved this show growing up. This premise, the characters, the cgi that blew my mind as a kid. I remember how happy I was when Phil and Keely started dating. I was super crushed when I found out the show was ending. I’m glad it had an ending though seeing as a lot of shows don’t get that treatment. I never realized the similarities between Phil of the Future and wizards. While both shows shared things in common they were both very different but great shows.

This channel is just pure nostalgia, and I'm here for it!

At the time this was cancelled, there was speculation that Phil of the Future ended because Disney wanted to push more for Aly and AJ marketing. The sisters made a pilot for a show called "Haversham High" but the show wasn't picked up. Since Alyson Michalka had the new series lined up, PotF ended. That's what my memory of fifteen years ago recalls.

I’m 20 now. I remember as a kid my big brother was a Disney fanatic. I love watching everything I used to see as a kid, I’m very appreciative that I can feel like I’m a kid again watching Phil of the Future etc.

"Probably doesn't top yours, I'm guessing"

joke's on you, this was one of the extremely rare few shows I _had_ to be at for the premiere, and it remained my top favorite DCom until they cancelled it and I will never forgive them for that.

It is one of my favorite show's from my childhood. Very few people my age remember it, so thank you for talking about it in such a positive way.

Thank you to this show for giving us Aly & Aj! The episode where Phil hears Aly sing and he loves her voice so he tries to convince her to sing in front of a crowd at a talent show but because of her stage fright that developed from a performance she did years earlier she was scared to do it. Thanks to Phil he helps her find the courage and overcome it by shrinking himself to be by her side literally hanging from the mic while she was on stage singing. He believes in her and him being there helps her to have the confidence to perform. The song Protecting Me is still one of my favorites. I love that the Michalka sisters write all their own lyrics. That’s when Aly and Aj’s music career was born and they got signed to Hollywood records. After that we were given all those awesome catchy hit songs the sisters created for their debut album. I don’t know about you but those songs will forever bring back so much nostalgia whenever I hear them. Such a good Disney channel era! Definitely miss those days!
