How A Pollen Trap Works (Bee Pollen)

Bee pollen has great benefits for our health. Now more and more beekeepers are trying to collect pollen to sell. Bee pollen contains all elements to sustain life.

Here I discuss the basics of how a pollen trap works. I show how a bee would pass through the trap and where the pollen would go in the trap for collection.

There a a few different styles of pollen feeders. Some go on over the entrance of the hive. Then there is this trap which goes on top the hive. And then a third which goes on the bottom of the hive. So you have a few option.

When using a pollen trap at first the bees will seem confused. This is because the entrance that was just free to pass though is now blocked. Give them time to adjust. Also do not use the trap at all times. Make sure every few days you open the bypass so the bees can get some protein (pollen).

Fresh bee pollen can usually be purchased at your local farmers market.

Thanks, I have a sun dance II for about 10 years and never used it, , , .arrived damaged and no manual.  I have out apiaries but now have one close to home and will try it out later in the spring

8 frame mediums.
I'd like to see if you would know of plans ? So I could build my own.
Dadant wants close to $75.00.
I can't do that.

Hi Jason, How do you store pollen? Do you have to refrigerate/freeze it immediately upon extraction? I’m in a temperate climate where humidity is high therefore the pollen has a wet feeling to it. Should I sun-dry it before bagging and freezing it? What is the shelf life for raw pollen? Appreciate your take on this.

hey I was wondering how the screens are on the bees??...I have seen the damage that a Queen Excludor can have on the bees and worry that the pollen catcher, I just purchased, will have the same effect. I bought the Bottom Pollen Trap by Dadant which works pretty much the same as the one in the video I believe. Thank you for all the great videos! I am new to all this and you've taught me a great deal!
