We've been using the GoPro Hero 8 Black for two weeks. It's got some great things and some terrible things. Its really a camera that doesn't do anything half ways, its either got GREAT image quality (some of the best I've ever had on an action camera) but its also done a few things that could be deal breakers.

But is it actually worth buying?

Lets find out!

Also 200% agree about the mount. If you strip those screws you're screwed.

I watch your videos because of two things:
1. The way you say "the pillars of action"
2. Review

I have a feeling that the lens cover on the Hero 8 is not as "nonreplaceable" as everyone assumes. There is a seam around the front cover and the rear lcd which seems to indicate how the camera was assembled at the factory. The front probably can be pried off taking the lens cover with it. If that is the case, it is only a matter of time before some factory in China starts cranking out replacement lens covers for the Hero 8. I purchased a non fisheye lens for my Hero 4 Black a couple of years ago. Removing the stock lens and installing and focusing the new one was not a job for the faint hearted.

“I don’t usually talk about color science” I’m a new subscriber here, but I’ve watched several videos and you’ve talked about color science in like 95% lol.

The lens cover not being removable sucks so bad.

I'm ordering a cover for mine. Gopro should have included one in the box.

Due to my disability I was a Gopro fan for a few years for its ease of use. Never let me down. As always I Sold my hero 7 to upgrade to the 8 but before I did saw many reviews and sadly wasn’t enough to convince me this time. Just for the camera I’m now blogging with my iPhone 11 Pro, so yes no phone service. Recording is amazing day and night, 4K 60fps front and back cameras. Maybe the hero 9 can step it up and bring back the action camera.

I upgraded from a Hero 5, and am VERY excited to sell off my gimble. My primary use is scuba diving trips, so the removable lens cover has never been a concern. The stabilization is what I wanted underwater, and while filming on the boat. I must admit though, there are some insane new underwater housings for iphones that even have temperature and depth sensors. Oh, and O-H!

I managed to get a Hero 8 two days ago and for me and my “niche” films it has blown me away. I have been using a Go Pro Hero 6 with a Feiyu Tech WG gimbal AND external audio, heavy and cumbersome and a pain to edit. Yesterday in rain, strong wind and constant movement the Hero 8’s Hypersmooth 2.0 was out of this world, also the audio despite the high wind was amazing and it picked up the other guys that were with me far better than my external recording up from me in the UK!

I was excited about the 8 when I first saw it. But that non removable lens cover is a deal breaker for me. Maybe once they see how many sales they've lost because of that, they will add it back to Hero 9.

I upgraded from a Hero 3+ to the 8 today. Went for quick burn on my MTB and it has blown me away! Image is so crisp and smooth.

I've never used the HDMI port on a GoPro and have been using them since version 3. Less ports the better.

Hey man, this was a truly great video. I just bought a GoPro 8 and I'm finding out some of its nuisances a little bit late. Luckily for me I didn't buy it primarily as an intense action camera and for whatever little intense action my camera might ever see, I will just buy the protective action case and the lens protectors. My GoPro will live a mostly pampered life lol. Nonetheless I do agree with you that HDMI and particularly the replaceable lens cover should have been included as standard options with this camera, especially for those who truly intend to put the "action", into their action camera. As for the cost of some of the expansions and accessories, I heard it is possible that some of those $80 dollar add ons might go on sale this December, but perhaps only for the GoPro Plus subscribers... whio for the moment get 50% discount off of most of the accessories, which at least makes the extra expenses a little bit more tolerable and you do get a free 30 dat trial, so that is something to take advantage of for anyone purchasing the new GoPro 8.

We GoPro users end up buying a bunch of accessories anyway right? Just buy a protective housing..GoPro OR aftermarket. I still have a Hero 3 and keep it in a waterproof housing for protection from drops and scratches. (I have the one that will hold the camera and the $79.00 LCD Screen) If I want absolute best quality just for handheld shots I remove the camera from the housing. If your around gritty lens spoilers like sand or dirt, you shouldn't film with an exposed lens or irreplaceable lens housing as in the Hero 8 anyway. (Such as intense cycling, beach activities on the sand, ATVing, mudwrestling LOL...yeah.)
I have a DJI Mavic Air and I bought a lens filters kit, and you can bet I will have a UV filter on it to PROTECT the lens on the drone. I have a problem with GoPro's prices for accessories more than the Hero cameras. And if you join the GoPro Plus for 5 bucks a month, you're supposed to get 50% off on some accessories. Good luck with that because its not a whole lot of items. That's why they lose soooo much money to aftermarket people making same things for so much less. Yeah, I know some are cheap, but if you buy on Amazon and you don't like it, send it back. Sometimes I order several things at the same time from different manufactures and compare all at once . This way I don't have to try/send back/ get another/ yada yada. Now, it's time for me to start learning my new Hero 8, so excuse me folks!

You are absolutely right. The non replaceable lens is a showstopper for me.
I was going to buy it but not now.

First, I'd have to agree with all the comments and opinions in this video.
Second, I'd love to own a Hero 8, it is the best action cam ever made.
Third, I know I'll never own a Hero 8 as they are far too expensive.
Fourth, Here in Canada, the Hero 7 is still over $600 even though the Hero 8 has been released.
I guess the bottom line is if you want to pay for an expensive action cam that you can potentially break the first time you use it?
Bottom line; a great camera, I just with they were under $100 each.

I had two sevens, bought an 8 and recently another 7. Hate the door on the 8 and the 7 operating system is easier to use on the fly. On the lens, I just tape a piece of ND film over it. Need that anyway for prop issues shooting aviation.

Upgrading from the Hero4, none of those cons are deal breakers for me. I've already spent the last 4+ years without a removable lens. The only other negative is if the legs broke, well, then I would have to get a case for it...much like I've already had to do with the Hero4. I make things work, for as long as possible!
