Does anyone else remember Eddie the Eagle? He was a very bad ski jumper who qualified and come get in the 1988 Olympics for Britain. He was celebrated as a hero of the mediocre just trying despite having no talent. I was wondering why the world reacted so differently to Raygun than to Eddie the Eagle, and I don’t think it can all be attributed to “wokeness, ” (discussions of cultural appropriation, ) or to the patriarchy. I think Eddie the Eagle was very humble about his lack of skill, and tried anyway. Whereas Raygun, with her PhD, and posturing, and husband who is a dance coach (who also isn’t great at breaking) was very full of hubris. I think people were reacting to her ego while being bad. It shows how much people respond to humility.
