As a retired peace officer and CSI, I just want to remind everyone of how hard it is to investigate cases such as this due to the sheer amount of information being received. A very large amount of which is bad or malicious information that muddies the water, preventing the investigators from getting a clear picture of all that happened leading up to, during, and after a crime.
A truly professional investigative team ignores nothing. As a result, they have to wade through that mud, searching for the permanent facts hidden in that mud. They have to fully investigate and filter out all the thousands of pieces of bad and malicious and misleading information in order to get to the facts. This takes a great deal of time because this information has to be examined individually, properly placed onto a timeline of events, and then compared and cross-indexed to insure it is or is not relevant and or reliable.
If the information appears to be deliberately misleading (such as the false gamer information mentioned above), it opens a new case that requires more investigators to be assigned in order to investigate, file charges and prosecute the individual who provided or planted that false trail!
When a case is of national importance, that muddy water can grow quickly from a puddle, to a pond, and then to a lake.
