Episode 289: Join Kidney Health Coach James Fabin and the renowned Nephrologist, Dr. Rosansky, as we dive deep into the world of blood pressure medications, both for those with Kidney Disease and those without. Are you wondering if lisinopril, amlodipine, or thiazide diuretics are right for you? Look no further! We'll explore the benefits, potential risks, and the reasons these are commonly prescribed for kidney health. Harness the power of knowledge to make informed decisions for your kidney health journey.

Here are some of the blood pressure medications Dr. Rosansky spoke about to help with reducing protein in urine (proteinuria or albuminuria):
1. ACE Inhibitors: ACE inhibitors work by blocking the action of the enzyme responsible for the production of angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels and increases blood pressure. Some common ACE inhibitors include:
- Benazepril (Lotensin)
- Captopril (Capoten)
- Enalapril (Vasotec)
- Fosinopril (Monopril)
- Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril)
- Quinapril (Accupril)
- Ramipril (Altace)

2. ARBs: ARBs block the action of angiotensin II by preventing it from binding to its receptor. This helps relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Some common ARBs include:
- Candesartan (Atacand)
- Irbesartan (Avapro)
- Losartan (Cozaar)
- Olmesartan (Benicar)
- Telmisartan (Micardis)
- Valsartan (Diovan)

3. SGLT-2 Inhibitors:
- Canagliflozin (Invokana)
- Dapagliflozin (Farxiga)
- Empagliflozin (Jardiance)
- Ertugliflozin (Steglatro)
- Sotagliflozin (Zynquista)

Super helpful! Thanks Doc and Dad! I was put on Losartan and my eGFR dropped to 58 and my doc and I both freaked out. Knowing this is expected takes a load off! Turns out I was dehydrated and eGFR went back to 63 after properly hydrating. I also was lifting more weights which upped my creatinine. Anyway, thanks for this super helpful info!

I believe the doctor says it can lower a bit but overall Losartan can extend life and help with hardening of the arteries etc. He said Losartan was one of the better drugs for kidney disease. Hope that helps. The Dr also mentioned a low protein diet but not too low for kidney health as well keeping top number BP within 130 to 120. Also he mentioned protein in the urine along with high gfr as being more dangerous.

Amlodipine also messes with your gums. Periodontist asked if I was taking Amlodipine as my gums were “spongey”, bled easily. My doctor lowered my Amlodipine Rx from 20mg to 10mg. My gums firmed up and are healthy. Minoxidil is what finally really lowered my blood pressure.

On lisinopril 10 mg per day for high blood pressure. Cut out almost all sodium and watch potassium intake. Checking my blood pressure each day. Trying to regulate stress through exercise and sufficient sleep. I need to get formally tested for CKD but there is protein in my urine so I will be seeing a doctor soon. Urine is bubbly/foamy but goes from light to medium yellow.
