MicroNugget: How to Connect GNS3 to Live Physical Network in Windows 8?

In this video, Keith Barker covers setting up and connecting GNS3 to a live physical network when using Windows 8. If you're struggling to find where to apply configurations for GNS3 in Windows 8, it's because Microsoft hid them away — see where.

Keith demonstrates every step you'll want to follow in order to connect a virtual Windows 8 network to a live one. Follow along as Keith demonstrates the five steps to connect GNS3. Start by finding the Hardware Wizard and choose the right Microsoft network adapter to install the Loopback Interface. Next you'll need to configure Internet Connection Sharing on the real physical interface. After that, head to GNS3 and place the loopback into it as a cloud. After that, you've got to specify the right IP address on the GNS cloud so it can be found. And last, wrap up by making sure that GNS3 is pointing at the right IP address to find its default gateway.

Just bought the CCNA Security book by Keith and thought I'd have a go at GNS3, this was my sticking point and now all it's steam ahead.

Open source software, with fairly new Windows versions ? There are still some issues to work out, and sounds like you are running into some. I don't know why adding the switch would cause a failure. As a work around, avoid using a switch. If you must have a switch, you may want to use a router switch module in GNS3, which can provide similar functionality.

Hope that helps,

Keith

Hello Keith, This is awesome video. However, like me there are many other who want to connect their home lab containing switches to GNS3 virtual routers using windows 8. The method you showed is good for internet connection using ICS but it won't work with lab switch say if I want to ping from GNS3 router to physical switch or telnet vlan 1 interface of physical switch to remotely connect from virtual router for managment purposes. Hope to get answers from you. Thanks!!

thanks keith very informative, however i still have problems with connection to loopback via gns3, after troubleshooting it was a firewall problem, so just to share, check firewall settings.

Hi Patrick-

I am not sure there is a working solution for that with VBox/GNS3/Win8.x at the moment.

I would be interested in any testing you do that may allow it.

Other than disabling the public profile of my Windows firewall, the only way I could get this to work was to add a new inbound firewall rule allowing everything with a source IP of 192.168.137.1.

I'm having problem with GNS3. I have created a a GNS LAB for VMWare lab as Keith suggested in VCP 5.50 training lab.

Please find below router configuration
OS Win7
Windows firewall off
Cloud connected with LoopBack
LoopBack connected with FastEthernet1/0
Cloud connected with VMNet1
VMNet1 connected with FastEthernet1/1

Now my bBut my problem is: -

Router is pinging Loopback - Yes
Router is ping WiFi - No
Windows OS is pinging FastEthernet1/0 - Yes
Windows OS is pinging FastEthernet1/1 - No
VM is pinging FastEthernet1/1 - No
