Agree with Kevin's take on the sermon, in that it sounds like Jesus is illustrating how impossible it is to keep the law. Immediately after the Sermon they encounter the centurion and Jesus tells his followers that He has not seen faith in Israel like the faith the centurion has, kind of foreshadowing how He is going to deal with both groups if Israel doesn't repent.
