Today we're continuing our WiFi series with the example of cracking a WPA-Pre Shared Key. We started by diving into a PSK brute force with John the Ripper with a previously captured 4-way handshake. Since we've taken a step back and covered promiscuous and monitor mode in terms of packet sniffing, and how MAC addresses come into play here. And now we'll cover the ingredients needed for this recipe of passphrase cracking delightfulness.

@tonyisgrendel Thanks for the reminder on CTRL+l. I go back and forth between that and typing out clear to clear the screen and I find that when doing HakTip it looks odd if the screen just instantly clears -- sorta looks like a jump cut.

@LemonPieLoL good point. I have a feeling I'm not getting all of the information out of iw. That or airbase-ng is doing something ever so crafty that I'm not aware of. Either way, I'll eventually get to that. I'd like to point this series in the direction of honeypots and building your own access points once I wrap the WPA crack.

Damn, when I was wardriving about 9 years ago, I didn't do such an extensive linux (BackTrack 3) check/probe whether what modes my mini PCI-e WLAN WiFi card (BCM4311 chip) supports. 🤔😐

I only knew it supported the RF Monitor & Managed Mode. Didn't know about the rest. Thanks ! 😆😎

I'm blasting all these networking vids. I cant seem to get some of my distros online. Using a wifi dongle, that might be the problem too. Considering buying one that specifically says its linux compatible.

How does the hardware determine what mode the nic can use? they all seem to involve catching or sending packets, while i'd figure software would tell the computer what to do with them.

i'd definitely watch a spin-off channel called hat tip XD

@JohnnyCacheGer @LemonPieLoL is right -- Ubuntu is dead simple. Give it a try -- at least in a VM. Shannon will be doing a HakTip this week/next week on step-by-step in VirtualBox. It's not scary at all :)
