The hockey “code” can be interpreted in many different ways at times, in this case Tim, Kevin Bieksa & Mike Futa explain why Canucks’ defenceman Alex Edler answered the bell and fought Leafs forward Wayne Simmonds.

Best thing in hockey right now is kevin bieksa .... someone who has been there and not afraid to tell the truth

Finally someone that knows hockey intervenes with everyone being up in arms about that fight. These guys were bang on with what they said!

Love Kevin Bieksa! He absolutely nailed it here.

Absolutely spot on by Bieksa.. and that's with some expected built in bias from a former teammate and close friend, which makes it even more impressive. Anyone that doesn't understand how or why this situation happened exactly how it did and is upset for whatever reason really needs to listen to EXACTLY what Bieksa says here. THIS actually is "the code."

Simmonds hits looked slow motion. He took it easy on him, on purpose. Good for Simmonds.

Respect to Edler for answering the bell, yes he cant fight at all but at least he took up the challenge.

Excellent segment.

You can tell that Wayne & Alex are vets. No, not because of that bit of grey in their beards, but because they had a full understanding of how to deal with this.

Edler knew he made an error, and he acknowledged that this somewhat makes you a sacrificial lamb, in a sense.

Leafs wanted some payback, and they got it in one of the more tasteful ways who can go about it.

Simmonds knew when it was time to let up, and it is much easier to do so when your combatant understands that unspoken "code."

Elder's cheekbone will heal. He did the right thing by WILLINGLY taking his medicine.

Edler don’t need ppl saying it was unfair — how you think that makes him feel.

he was OK with it and allowed some closure. done.

Bieksa is an absolute beaut. Blows my mind that so many people that are the “voices” for hockey never played hockey. Good on Bieksa for always being 100.

I'm a die hard canucks fan and I have no problem with what happened. Edler had to answer the bell

Agreed. If you throw a cheapshot and the guy is out with an injury, you don't have the luxury of choosing who to fight when it comes to the code

You rock Kevin Bieska! Great to hear from a NHLer to tell you whats real and how it should be.

I'd rather lose a fight and take a couple of punches than getting run all the time and having to look over my shoulder every time I play against them or have my teammates taking shots and having to fight for me

I respect Edler for dropping the gloves with Simmonds tbh, and ppl mad at Simmonds. I really think he could have done more damage then he did.

If I'm a Canucks fan, I'm glad it's Simmons because he knows what he's doing. He's out to make Edler pay but not out to hurt him. He knows when to hit him but knows when not to. If Simmons wanted to, they'd be scrapping Edler off the ice. That was never the purpose.

Plus Simmonds stopped immediately when Edlers went down. He stopped IMMEDIATELY

This is great! I really appreciate the discussion and learning about this.

I hope you do more talks like this in the future son I can learn how to be when I play hockey one day.
