Actually the Berezovsky clip - despite being a live performance - is still edited; the video doesn't match the audio at the chord before the arpeggios. He probably messed up even more severely than we see here

This is why we should encourage classical musicians to learn improvisation

Rubinstein improvised by pretending he was playing the piano so pianisimmo that you just couldn't hear it. 🤣

This kinda sounds weird, but in a way this is inspiring, it shows that even the greatest pianists are humans after all. Even though they probably feel shame/lost in situations like this.

At least 95% in the audience won't have a clue, the rest will have an enjoyable memory.
Have heard world class violinist lose synch with the orchestra and save it - unforgettable!

If you screw something up during a performance, you just keep going. That applies to more than classical pianists.

This is exactly why improvisation is a crucial skill to have and should never be confided solely to jazz pianists.

After the Rubinstein modulation I would've screamed "bravo" even if they kicked me out afterwards cause WOW

I recently saw a pianist just skip through a few measures of the second movement of Bartók's piano sonata, replacing them with some material from the end. Definitely wouldn't have noticed, had I not been fighting that piece myself for weeks at that point.

I once had a bad memory lapse, but instead of trudging through, I stopped completely and scratched my head…..🙃

See, memory lapses don't have to be awkward.

Check out Gilels' recording of Scriabin Sonata 4 - he seemingly forgets the entire development section and just mashes some random notes for a bar instead before skipping straight to an enitrely different he does this more than once in the movement😃

This is one of reasons why I always recommend my students to read sheet music when performance. I think “pianist shouldn’t read sheet music on live” is a total bullshit and I’m completely against this way of thinking.

Great musicians failing make it less embarrassing for us mortals to make mistakes.

Great video, and extremely impressive on the spot improvisations by the pianists, especially Rubinstein's

I got distracted playing The Mysterious Barricades in a concert many years ago. Lost my place, improvised for maybe 3 seconds, and continued on. Talking to friends and family after,
no one knew!

I learned three pieces by Philip Glass from the film “The Hours.” During a practice session I suddenly realized I was in a different piece from the one I started with. Thank goodness I was home alone, but in concert I’m positive nobody would have even noticed. All three were in the same key and character and seemed interchangeable. I decided to use the music at one performance of them just to make sure it didn’t happen.

The important thing is to have creative ways to continue the piece.

When u re great musician like them u hear one parcticular melody in multiple hundreds of another ways and its hard to remember which one is original... plus when u re not absolutely sure in note it affects on your orientation and thoughts sooo bad that it can even make you stop or mess the things up and the thing those pianist keept playing without melody gets cut off is amaizing
