For the balls example, we could also use the equation m1*u1 + m2*u2 = m1*v1 + m2*v2
Dont get confused, U and V are both fore velocities but to differentiate between before collision and after collision, so basically the left hand side is for before collision and right hand side for after collision. If we replace the values we get, 5*8 + 2*0 = 5*6 + 2*v2 because we need v2. 40+0=30+2*v2. Mke v2 subject of formula. v2=(40-30)/2= 5m/s
