The Cirrus SR20's New Engine

For 2017, Cirrus has re-engined it's entry-level SR20 with a 215-HP 4-cylinder Lycoming IO-390, which replaces the 200-HP 6-cylinder Continental IO-360 used on the SR20 for years. To find out what drove the company's decision to swap engines, and to see how the aircraft performs, Aviation Consumer Editor Larry Anglisano flew the G6 SR20 and talked with Ivy McIver during a visit to the Cirrus Vision Center delivery hangar in Knoxville, Tennessee.

I remember to thos day, tje very first time I saw a Cirrus SR20. It was 2001 and in person. I remember being blown away/excited about its modern design and sexy lines. It had much ramp appeal. But, now it has become "normal" for me; no longer excited when looming at one. Cockpit/cabin and panel still does, but not the exterior. What now catches my attention and has for awhile, is tne Diamond line up qnd the Pipistrel Panthera. Oh, the new Raptor aircraft does as well.

Wow, its 2019 and the mixture control of the 1930's is still available... amazing.
Please Lyco and Conti, get some modern technologies in these engines. This is getting ridiculous beyond belief.

Would like to see the IO-390 in a 172. Give it a constant speed prop and the 172 would be a much better performer. Though as a 6'5" 260 pound guy I truly like the roominess of the 182.

I'm happy Cirrus has switched to the Lycoming engine in their SR20s. Great video!

Funny to look at this today. I fly both G2s and G6s, and my resume is: No engine progress for 20 years? Same speed, the G2s are even faster most of the time, same fuel consumption. It's high time for a FADEC Diesel for the SR20, as retrofit option for all generations please 🙏

I've been waiting for something, anything on the SR20 G6 since the G6 upgrade affects the SR20 more than SR22, yet no mention of the SR20.

150lbs is not another person in America. Maybe a leg.

Nice, but where is the automatic mixture control? It is 2017! Enough of the 1930 technology!
The Gemini engine is the family that needs development.

Add Rotax to that mix as well. They need a 200+ HP engine soon!

I’d be concerned about the CHTs your screen shot captured. A modern Cirrus shouldn’t have any over 400 dgf in cruise flight lop.

È um excelente produto, mas esse motor a gasolina consome muito, è eficente mas està na hora de colocar um motor mais moderno .

Doesn't that mean you now need a high-performance rating? I thought the point of the SR20 was that you could fly it with just a PPL.

First you start a fire, then keep shoveling coal in until your boiler reaches optimum steam pressure. Make sure your horse is securely tied to the hitching post so he doesn't run off during your flight. Now get in the plane and flip the breaker to turn on what the kids are calling "electric lights." Open the steam valve slowly and take to the skies.

Seriously, small aircraft have engines that aren't just outdated, they're antique. Imagine throwing an engine from a 50's automobile in your car today.

"New Engine" HA!

Really hard to watch an interview filmed with a fish-eye lens. Annoying. You'd think a professional journalist would know better.

Beautiful aircraft and with the Lycoming engine it's even sweeter. Nonetheless, I'm not a fan of all glass cockpits, and I still enjoy the traditional yoke control. Thank you for the informative video! ("A good pilot is always learning." --Jason Schappert)
