Two hydrogens form one deuterium, and two deuteriums are fused to make one helium.

It uses 620 million tonnes of hydrogen per second, which is quite a lot when you think about it, to form 616 million tonnes of helium. The missing mass is converted to energy, in accordance with E=mc^2: about 385 yottawatts (a trillion trillion watts).

Fun fact: the energy is released as gamma radiation, which would shred our DNA. Luckily, the centre of the Sun is so crowded that a photon takes maybe a million years to get out of the core, constantly bumping into other particles and losing energy as it does so.

Well, not all of hydrogen is converted into sunlight, if that was the case then Sun would be much hotter.

In reality, two hydrogen atoms are converted into one helium atom. But one helium has slightly less mass than two hydrogens. And this extra mass produces enough energy to sustain Sun and give sunlight.

To understand how much energy is stored in matter, there's a quite simple example. The atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima converted less than 0.01 grams of uranium into explosive energy. Everything else in the bomb still remained matter.
