I think the vast majority of people accept and understand that the chances of us being alone in the universe is almost 0. Hence I imagine there would be little to no panic, the panic would come from those in power knowing there is something or someone more powerful than they.

And our scientists ignore them because there are too many from too many other places that are all too similar? Because if we're searching for life out there, it's impossible that there aren't other civilizations out there doing the same.

I wouldn't be surprised if not only are we visited by extraterrestrials on a regular basis, but they have no real reason to make themselves noticable, meaning making first contact. If anything we're another planet in a certain part of space that has life on it and the interest is merely how we go about our day. Maybe when we achieve the ability to travel beyond our solar system they'll start to make themselves known.

one thing a lot of people don't think about is if/when we do find aliens, they most likely will not be even remotely close to us in terms of communication or body parts like ears, mouths, etc. so we may not even be able to communicate with them easily.
