Sigma Female & Male - a lesson on the Barnum Effect

YouTube suggested I watch a video on the Sigma Female Personality Traits. I realized it would make a GREAT lesson on the Barnum Effect. I pulled a few lines from the video transcript to use as examples for this video. Enjoy!

I’ve also noticed that those videos not only want to be as relatable as they can but also they try to make everybody feel like the best human being in the world, no matter whether it’s alfa, sigma or whatever else herd terminology. The same goes with 16 personalities in some videos or tests sites - instead of listing real positive and negative tendencies and knowledge of self understanding there are just some uplifting words and lists of well-known people with the same personality

After being typed as an INTJ and finding some explanation for some of my "against societal norms" behavior, I became somewhat obsessed with learning more. During this search, I too, came across the Sigma/Omega ect. I quickly dismissed it as garbage. The epitome of talking a lot but not saying much. I grew concerned when I saw this video release, I said to myself, "She doesn't subscribe to this does she?" I was thinking, "How did this pass your validity test? You're an INTJ, I know you have a validity test!" 2 min in, "I couldn't find any validation for it anywhere." At this point I am feeling better (I should have been fine, I admit I did not know what the Barnum Effect was prior to this vid). At this point I realized you were gearing up to tear it apart. Strapping myself in, I am going to enjoy this immensely!

Edit: Dopamine Rush achieved.

Final. I've been called sigma male as if that's a good thing, I hear comments about "being the quiet alpha" or "the lone wolf", I think all this sigma bullshit is just that, it's bullshit. I think people use it to cope with their own social ineptitude while at the same time patting themselves on their backs because of how "unique" they are. This sigma archetype is a cheap way of feeling like a top personality without putting in the work that is expected from a top personality.

Se: I notice your hair looks different
Fi: this is so cool, I got the same type of videos also recommended lately like "are you a sigma male" or "how to know if you're a sigma male"
Te: although it's all a bunch of BS
Ni: this comment has structure. you've grown so much Alex, well done :D

I think this is a good example of the phrase, "They talk a lot, but they don't say much." I come away from some of these statements saying, "what does that even mean?"

Oh I’m laughing out loud! Thank you. I think you should do a really serious sounding video about the opposite type of the Sigma( whatever it would be called):
“There is nothing special about her but people tend to dislike her anyway.
She starts fights just to make drama but runs away when her loved ones need protection.
She doesn’t do things with any uniqueness, yet still doesn’t fit in, despite her craving to surround herself with fake friends and treat them poorly, as she is naturally a bad friend.
And lastly, when she doesn’t care to put energy into succeeding, she experiences failure.
Are You this type of RARE woman? You may have thought you were the only one, but your sisters are out there….”

This was both very educational and enjoyable. Thank yoi, Lindsay!

Though I know you only used the "sigma type" as a means to educate on the barnum effect, I'd really appreciate your take on people identifying with the "alpha/beta" personality. I've kinda seen a disconnect between perception and reality there in the past.

For context, I've butted heads with a few self-proclaimed "alphas" in the past, and I find it a bit fascinating how fragile their ego seem to be. Interestingly enough, they were both ENTJs, (me being INTJ).

It is good seeing you exploring new subject. The high quality ones are the ones about cognition :)

Off topic, but I have a video idea. I would love to see one from you about your daily routine/schedule. I think so many can benefit from seeing how INTJs manage their time.

Yep, YouTube randomly recommended those same videos to me, and I watched one or two with mild interest, and immediately recognize that all the “unique traits” about each of them were just traits that basically everyone has, sometimes. Extremely ambiguous. Very Barnum Effect.

ENTP here; always fun when NT's pick something ridiculous apart.

Self proclaimed Alpha/Sigma are the social equivalent of donkeys. Only worse, because actual donkeys are interesting to interact with.

Hey you, be interesting or be gone-ya boring.

Great content as always, LiJo.

Very interesting! Everybody who watches videos or reads blogs online, or books about people need to see this and be more aware of this sort of effect.

Those Sigma contents are everywhere, I notice those views could range from 100, 000 to 1, 000, 000 people that could represent them.

That felt like you were reading a horoscope, I've not heard of the Barnum Effect before so don't know much about it at all. However, it amused me greatly watching you so politely pick it all apart. Do all INTJ's have a similar sense of humour I wonder!?

I need to learn how to do this when I'm teaching. Statements said to a group, that generally apply to all of them, when said in this Barnum Effect way are likely to feel personal to each of them and therefore garnish more "buy-in" from each of them. I'll try not to abuse this trickery. :)

INTP here. Before I used to think I was a beta because I couldn’t get women. Then I realized I was actually sigma because I never tried.
