Scientists Have An Update On Betelgeuse You Shouldn't Miss

The supernova of Betelgeuse is one of the most awaited astronomical events. #Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star in the constellation of #Orion. It is on its deathbed. It is 550 light years away from us.

In 2019, Betelgeuse mysteriously started dimming. Although it's a semi-variable star that brightens and darkens over 400 days, it showed unusual behavior in 2019. The red supergiant plummeted to 35% of its brightness, which led many to speculate that the end of the star is near.

However, after months of research, astronomers have figured out the reason behind the mysterious dimming of Betelgeuse. Will Betelgeuse undergo a #supernova anytime soon?

Don’t hold your breathe waiting for this event. “Soon” does not mean in our lifetimes.

What amazes me is not that scientists discovered the dimming of the light from Betelgeuse. Rather, it is mindboggeling that science has advanced to the extent astronomers were able to determine the cause. This video also reminds us of the vastness of our universe. It was only recently that we "saw" this event. However, the event actually occurred 550 years ago, which was 173 years before we invented the first telescope.

“Soon” means within a hundred thousand years, where astronomy is concerned.

1.5 Million years later: Finally! It went supernova!

It’s going to be sad that Orion will never look the same again…

It’s ready to explode in astronomical terms. Many thousands of years 😢

Crazy we are looking at events that happened millions of years ago. The universe just amazes me with it's vastness

LOL

“Any day now…”

That could be in the next 300, 000 years from now.

it is fascinating to think that some of the things we see in the night sky may not actually be there anymore, that we are just getting their old light. That most things aren't actually in the location that we see them in.

Love the fact that it went supernova a very long time ago and we are now intercepting the light from it 😊

We just released this news flash: Nothing has happened for two years.

It was actually the Vogon construction fleet passing in front of Betelgeuse on its way to make that hyperspace bypass we've been warned about.
(Well, the plans have been on display at your local galactic planning office on alpha centauri for 50 of your earth years... oh for heaven's sake mankind, it's only four light years away)

A thing about red stars is they all have a very bloated plasmasphere that glows red, can vary in size and can dim or brighten. Also all red stars have a strong electric field. We never see the actual surface of red star due to red glowing plasmasphere. Planets can also orbit inside the atmosphere of plasmasphere making it hard to detect for telescopes.

Me: Ultra excited to see the supernova of Betelgeuse.
Betelgeuse: They want to kill me. No one cares about me😭😭😭😭.

As I remember, such assumptions have also been made some months earlier when betelgeuse become dimmer than usual but then it was discovered that it was a gas cloud that came in front of it and blocked it's light.
But, if it is gonna supernova anytime now, then it should be easily visible to naked eye in the night sky..
I will research about it today...
And yeah, this video seems to be amazing as always...

So, Betelgeuse farted 550 light years ago and, now, Astrophysicists are all excited about it. Weird! 😲😲😲

The star could already have gone supernova 550 years ago, we are just waiting for the light from it to reach us.
