The 2021 Hyundai Elantra Should Be ILLEGAL *Self Wrecking Feature*

This 2021 Hyundai Elantra was given to me as a rental car while my F-250 gets fixed. It checks all the rental car boxes, low spec, okay power, okay handling, and good gas mileage. Unfortunately Hyundai decided this car should be sold with auto steering (not lane keeping, full auto steering) and no active cruise control. I've never driven a less intuitive and blatantly dangerous car in my life. None of the controls make sense, auto steer will always take back over once you push the button one time, it will happily wreck itself into a slower car or a wall in front of you, and it makes you complacent in a car that can't really drive itself. This is VERY bad, and there's no way it should be allowed to be sold without active cruise (or at least auto emergency braking).

Common Questions:

What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus

What do I do for a living? Make YouTube videos.

Can you wheelie? No, I suck.

Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.

Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Instagram: WatchJRGo

Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)

Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.

Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.

Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.

Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo

Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Tesla just disables all aids until the next ignition cycle. It might be Super Cruise that stops, turns on the hazards, and calls the police.

Wouldn't it be great if cruise control and driver aids worked the same in every car? 🤷‍♂️

This isn't a price thing: For an extra $950, the SEL Convenience Package adds a leather steering wheel and shifter, wireless charging, and Smart Cruise Control.

What stupid commentary. It's $20, 000. You don't pay for beer and expect champagne. It's not even billed as a self-driving car. For a few hundred more, in the next trim-level up you get the main thing you complain is laking, adaptive cruise control. Elantra easily has the best and most advance tech in its class. That's why it''s car of the year.

Just wow...
1. Beauty is in the eye og the beholder
2. The Elantra is not a Stinger or a Tesla
3. The features you are looking for are in the Limited not the SE which is entry level
4. The adaptive cruise control prevents you from hitting the person in front of you and it is programmable to maintain a distance no matter the speed. I also cant back into anything either due to the auto braking. Both on the Limited.
5. Why are you comparing a 20k Elantra with a 35k Tesla?
6. You can turn off and on all of the safety features very easily from the display screen.
7. Yes it has a CVT.

I have the Limited and it is fantastic. Dual zone auto AC. Dual 10.25" displays. Leather. Sunroof. Wireless charging. BlueLink remote start with remote climate control. Real time vehicle tracking. Bose stereo system. And more...

Drive a Limited. Nothing like the model you are reviewing.

Just bought it. Been using it a bit. Idk I turn on the feature just to keep me in the middle. If I wanted a full self driving car, I'll call a cab

Anyone hearing about a rash of 2021 Elantra's running into cars and going off the road? No? That's what I thought.

For 20 thousand dollars, what do you expect? For the money it’s a great car to get you from point A to point B.

The Elantra is the entry-level car. It has tons of features for an entry-level car.

As a car guy, I want to be in charge, NOT technology.

This car is dangerous, tells $60k Tesla lover to $18k Hyundai.

I actually love my Elantra. For the price tag, it’s pretty damn cool. You want more expensive and higher end trims, then you’ll need to dish out more money and top dollars.

So the car your driving isn't self driving, just assisted driving. The Smart Cruise Control will control distance to the car in front of you. My wife's Kona has those features and they work fine.

Totally agree about the bad habits thing... everyone’s first car should be a stick shift shit box with crank windows.

This must only be on the rental versions. According to Hyundais site, it comes with Forward collision avoidance assistwhich will warn then activate emergency braking. Not sure if it looks behind to see if anyone will hit you or not but hey at least you will try not to hit the one in front.

Using the turn signal turns off the lane keep so you can change lanes without it fighting you

Its "steering assist" to help you keep center lane for when you look at something to the side you wont veer off toward the edge of the road. That's all it is, not a self driving anything.
I drove one when my Veloster N was in the shop overnight. Couldn't figure out why the steering wheel was fighting me.
Somewhat annoying around town but on a trip maybe not so bad as I like to sightsee. I thought all cars were supposed to have that emergency braking system in them, apparently not.

I'd be very happy with that if I needed a cheap car for daily driving. Seems well equipped for the price. Obviously I'd get the slightly better version without the major issues you outline here, but it seems like a fine car to me.

I work part-time at a Honda dealer and drive a lot of cars with Honda Sensing/Adaptive Cruise/Lane Keep Assist. It is a wonderful feature, and I miss it every time I hop back in my old BMWs. One thing is for sure...This next generation of drivers will be totally disconnected with all of these drivers aids...
