Its because the last time he was the favourite to win SPOTY after the klitchko victory the media twisted a tongue in cheek comment he made about his wife and Jessica Ennis Hill and portrayed him as a sexist and had the public signing petitions to get him removed. He knows if he won it the media would be ready to pounce the second he said something that wasn't PC and probably can't be bothered with the aggravation of it being all over the papers and the topic of conversation on the Jeremy Vine show for 3 weeks straight whether he should be removed or not. Cant blame him really. F the BBC and their award
