As someone who is allergic to adhesives, please give your clients an option, my last tattoo I didn't get chance to say anything before I got given second skin and the rash it gave me took as long to heal as the tattoo itself 😭

Edit for an FAQ as I'm tired of repeating myself lol
It was a tattoo from a friend of the family. Myself and my mom were getting tattoos, so the process was more lax than it has been in other appointments at different shops.
I knew going into it that I'm allergic to latex, I was reassured that the gloves aren't latex so that should be fine, and I wasn't worried.
I also knew I'm allergic to some adhesives, not all, some. Most maybe. What I didn't know was that second skin even existed. My first tattoo I got at 18 in 2016 was tiny and covered with plastic wrap. I expected plastic wrap. During my tattoo at this place, the artist and my mom were deep in conversation. I didn't get a chance to protest to the second skin, and I wouldn't have known to as I didn't know what it was, and I didn't even know I'd be allergic to it. I just didn't get chance to ask the question, as the artist was distracted. Since then, every appointment I go to I make sure to lable the allergy on the paperwork, though even with my new artist he often forgets and I have to remind him as he's taking the second skin out that I'm allergic, because I know that I am now.

I hope this clears some stuff up. TLDR; I didn't know what second skin was or what it was made of, I didn't get chance to protest, I didn't even know I would have to protest as, like I said, I was expecting cling film/plastic wrap. I found out thanks to this tattoo that its one of the adhesives I am allergic to. I always take "responsibility for my own allergy" now, though as someone who also is fighting anxiety, it's often hard to feel like I can speak up about these things in the moment, so please have some kindess when think about how easy it is for you to speak up, not everyone feels comfortable making a scene or questioning the situation, especially when it's not life threatening and is only likely to cause a rash...

Thanks for the likes and the kind comments :)

Some customers have allergies to adhesives or the second skin itself, so you should always check with them and provide them the option for a cling wrap. Second skin is a fantastic product, but no one tool suits every job.

I had an alergic reaction to second skin so much so that my skins rejected a lot of ink. The next time I went, my artist gave me some silver infused bandages of some kind. No problems with those. Definitely give people choices.

I have allergic reactions to adhesives. I used a second skin once to try to heal a scratch on my face and the rash was more disfiguring than the scratch

Remember second skin can give rashes(not common but it can)so even if your not gonna give 2 choice’s always ask, the adhesive in second skin can give allergic reactions which then creates the rash so check with the person

Depends if you’re allergic or not tho since many are but personally from tattoos I’ve healed and looking at others, second skin. It keeps it blacker and more vibrant.

Cling wrap till I get home. Shower and then keep it clean! Soap and water. Mostieizer after 24 48. Just my routine. They always heal great

I did my tattoo back in 2015 (in Japan). They gave me cling wrap and grapeseed lotion.

Followed the instructions to the letter. No infections, no issues. It’s been almost a decade, no fading, no issues. Still looks like it did a few weeks after it healed. 👍

I did neither, and kept it moisturized with what my tattoo artist recommended. Three different artists told me open air is best when possible.

This validates my tendency to always have my new tattoos wrapped in cling wrap when I leave my house, people would fr tell me I’m doing too much but 6 years later and my very first tattoo looks just as a bright as it did day one

All of my tattoos have been cling wrap, I like to be able to clean the tattoo after I get home and then moisturize it. Looking after a tattoo is pretty easy and straight forward

I personally have a really bad reaction to second skin and learned after getting my sleeve that it was not for me so once I came but for touch ups I asked for the wrap instead of the second skin and everything healed just fine. Did take more attention to keep it clean but it worked out.

I got second skin on my last tattoo. I can say it was amazing not having to worry about water etc for those first 24h. Tattoo never hurt during healing. It was absolutely beautiful throughout.

NEW TO TATTOOS? 👀 Okay so if your a tattoo artist like myself its a preference... personally even if its someones first tattoo, I'd rather teach them how to properly heal and take care of their tattoo then cover it with anything. "Tattoos are forever and should always be taken care of even after healing period!" On that note, Its better to teach them how to let it breathe, bleed, and peel on its own, and when to apply Hustle Butter CBD Luxe (recommended helps keep richer color, reduces itching, helps healing) or Aquaphor... it all about helping them learn its not about keeping it wet, instead it teaches them how to apply softly and wipe off the excess till its a matte (NOT GLOSSY) layer. Most importantly, dont overly apply it throughout the day only as necessary. After being washed (in Showers or sink) let it dry for 30min before applying a new layer. "The goal is to let your tattoo dry, but not too much it will bleed, and keeping the proper amount of moisture in it!" Then after it heals take care of your tattoo, just apply a layer a day every day (keeps it from aging on the skin so fast and looking fresh!) 💯 Also wash if its contacted by foreign materials aka keep it clean!

PS: Oh and for those artist that would rather use second skin for areas that dont need to be covered are just lazy tattoo artist that dont appreciate the tradition of tattooing or want to teach someone whos new to it how it healing works period... they just want to make more appointments with more clients and keep their schedules more free instead of scheduling a follow up for a touch up because we are paid by the tattoo (if an artist charges you for your first touch up then they are trash and just using their leverage as advantage to force you to pay more to fix what you want done by them or go pay another artist at another shop). So for all the artist out there that know who you are... stop being lazy and educate like they're paying you for thats apart of tattooing and should come with the tattoo its professional to do so otherwise it can lead to infections and people being hospitalized! Also was the point of the Bloodborne Pathogens & Communicable Diseases Training.

On that note to those that read this have an amazing day! 🤘

*has flashbacks to when I used second skin once and had an allergic reaction*

I'm anal about taking care of my tattoos whilst they heal - I even use a new fresh towel to dry them after showering. I don't apply anything to the area until I absolutely know it is clean first. I also know how my body reacts to getting tattooed, so even if I didn't have an allergic reaction I would say no to second skin.

Disclaimer: Second skin is a fantastic product - I have multiple friends that use it and have no issues and their tattoos look amazing.

I know my body - so I personally dont use it for allergy reasons. I respect my artists work and don't want it wrecked by bad healing. I cannot use a lot of tattoo balms either (Dr Pickles, Revitalise etc).
