His military record isn’t what is the issue, it’s his willful misrepresentation of the facts surrounding it. His allowance of himself being referred to as a rank higher than that which he achieved. His claiming to be at war when he wasn’t. His dc paperwork noting “soldier not available.” His commitment to 6 years and stepping out after 4 when his unit was to be deployed….those are just inconvenient facts, no matter which side you’re on.

Taxing Walt's was "IN" the Guard for 24 years (one weekend a month with a paycheck). When called to serve he quit. Yes, he knew he was going to be called to serve before quitting. In Walt's words he called the men in the Guards nothing more than 19-year-old cooks.
