The Batman is the newest iteration of the Batman and was directed Matt Reeves. Robert Pattinson is the newest actor to play the character, along with Paul Dano as the Riddler and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman. A lot has changed for the DC brand in the past year. After almost a decade of divisive storytelling, most conclude that Matt Reeve's The Batman is fantastic. Why is this the case? What makes The Batman so great compared to other DC movies? In this video essay, I discuss The Batman 1 Year Later.

#TheBatman #DC #videoessay

2022s The Batman is the newest iteration of the caped crusader and features Robert Pattinson behind the mask. We have gotten many iterations of the batman. Some are borderline universally beloved, some universally hated, and some with mixed but strong opinions. As someone who is familiar with Batman but not a die hard fan, I didn’t know what to expect from The Batman. Matt Reeves is one of my favorite working directors, the planet of the apes trilogy is one of the most underrated trilogies ever made, so I was optimistic. I remember talking to big batman fans after this movie and they told me so many things they loved about this movie. They loved that this was the most detective batman we’ve ever gotten on the big screen. They loved the tone of Gotham and how it’s presented. They loved that this batman was maybe more brutal than any other batmans we’ve seen. And yes they loved that Batman wasn’t killing people anymore. I couldn’t disagree with them because, again, I’m not the most familiar with the batman lore. But what I am familiar with are movies and stories. So while this may or may not be a great adaptation of the batman character, it doesn’t change the fact that this movie was phenomenal. There are plenty of aspects of this movie that make it great, but today I want to focus on the character work. I haven’t seen every Batman story that exists, but what I can say is that of every Batman story I have seen, this movie has done the best job at building characters. So in this video, I want to dive deep into what I would argue are the 3 most important characters in the movie and what makes each of their stories so compelling. So with that being said, hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we’re gonna talk about the characters of Matt Reeves’ the batman.
Of course we must begin this The Batman video essay by talking about the batman and his character arc. We’ve seen many different types of arcs for batman. Sometimes it’s about him undergoing some change. Sometimes it’s about Gotham undergoing a change and how Batman will react. The Batman presents a story where Bruce Wayne goes on a typical character arc. He begins the story one way and by the end he is a changed man who has learned a valuable lesson. So even though the kind of arc he goes on is fairly generic, Matt Reeves perfected Batman’s story and gave him one of my favorite character arcs in 2022. So let’s dive deep into the character arc of Batman and what makes it so effective. In a character arc like Batman’s in this movie, there are 4 important narrative elements that must exist. The first is the character’s Want. What does that character want to happen in the story? Usually this is an external goal that is related to the plot. Bruce wants to protect Gotham City and its people. He goes around town and terrorizes criminals who dare bring harm to Gotham.

To me this film is like Blade Dunner or Dune. The story is solid, but what I’m really coming back for again and again is the atmosphere.

This movie gets so much out of sound design, lighting, score, etc, that most blockbusters don’t take advantage of.

I loved this movie when it first came out, and I still love it today as I think it gave Bruce one of the best character arcs he's ever had in a Batman film. The Batman got me more interested in Batman as a character and superhero than I ever have been. I just have nothing but respect for Matt Reeves as a director at this point, as he really did make a masterpiece of a film.

YES! “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that” and this movie has that arc for Batman. I choked up when he reached out his hand and the first person to grab it was the little boy. Matt Reeves is brilliant.

I remember back when the movie came out my theater was packed as hell. I never been A humongous fan of Batman, but this movie was awesome from start to finish. Matt Reeves really directed the shit out of this movie

Watching this movie in IMAX on a rainy day literally had a similar impact on me now as Spider-Man 2 as kid. It was such a good cinematic experience of a comic book character I love.

This is the Batman film I've always wanted and more. Everything was done so incredibly well and it even gave Batman a proper character arc to push him forward into the future.

This movie is what reignited my love for bikes. In September I got my first bike, a yamaha Bolt R, and man, I found my passion. Riding through Basel at night with Something in the way playing is my favourite part of the day

I love how he's brutal but refrains from killing cuz it really drives home the impression of a young early batman still driven by fear, resentment, and anger rather than one driven by justice and morality.

What a great essay. Totally overlooked the fact that Riddler states, it is not important who is under the mask of batman but that his actions uncover his true identity.

Kinda sad tho, that you didn't mention the Penguin, bat-mobile or even Falcon that much ^^'

Still very enjoyable!

This is the Batman movie we all wanted! It's focused on Batman, the camera shots are amazing. Being able to see Batman actually fight makes the Batman better than the tdk trilogy for me. Being able to see through the eyes of Batman himself is cool

To get an even better look into Edward/The Riddlers mind and motives you need to read Riddler: Year 1. It's a six issue comic based on him a year before the events of The Batman and basically explores what Edward goes through to get to that point in his life. There is currently 3 issues out and they're incredibly well written and the art suits the tone of the character so well. It's also written by Paul Dano, the actor who played The Riddler. You come to find he's not as uncaring as you assume but he's really just incredibly mentally ill and doesn't know where to channel all his negative emotions. Obviously only 3 issues are out so he's due to get more character development in the next 3 but yeah. Very good read, I certainly recommend it.

the change from "they think im in the shadows, their wrong, i am the shadows" to the light guiding everyone to safety was probably the coolest thing (not because of the character arc, but because of how they accomplished it)

The Batman was an incredible movie, loved the amazing cinematography, story, Michael Giacchino’s soundtrack was perfect, the opening scene leading to the Batman reveal was absolute perfection. Robert Pattinson and Paul Dano stole the show as Batman and Riddler, excited for the sequel.

Batman's story arc brought me tears. This is the only Batman movie where batman's arc is so perfect for the maturation of his character

The reason I liked this Batman was because it put a bigger spotlight on Bruce's humanity and heroism than any other Batman movie imo
