The splinter analogy was one of the best explanations i have ever heard in terms of understanding grain direction. Great information!

One of the best router videos I've ever seen. Patrick explains things really well and his ability to work with the camera make the viewer want to sit and finish watching what he's doing. He's actually inspired me to get my router out of the cupboard and start using it again. Well done guys.

Watched the video to learn the trick of preventing tearout around a corner, because I have a lot of pieces requiring roundover all the way around, so that's four corners apiece. It's soft wood, so I hope it works. Thanks for the tute!

I like your style and the way you explain some tricks for people who go flat out and make mistakes keep on the good work

Routing in the "wrong" direction is called 'climb cutting', as the router wants to climb onto the uncut material ahead. I do it often because I put radius on finger joined plywood boxes. I built a long base plate with a handle to control the router and take shallow passes.

You might consider bump-cutting, which also takes off a small amount at a time, but at a fixed position, making tear-out much less likely.
