The first time i came across this scripture i was asked to pray during service. I knew how to pray but praying before the congregation had me shook. I remember talking to God saying I didn’t know what to pray. I was reading my bible and this scripture was laid before me. I took that as the Lord saying allow the Holy Spirt to guide me.

Amen, I've been shamed and told I didn't know Jesus because I thought gibberish tongues were false.
I also got the threat/warning that I'd be punished for questioning it but not one single person could name one benefit to tongues other than "It edifies myself" which means they got a religious _feeling_ and can't explain because it isn't a real thing

The Lord was showed me this in an unction by the Spirit. It hit me how it is based on praying in the fullness of advocacy of the Paraclete for others in the Body and according to the Spirit's will.

I attend a Pentecostal church and I have always been taught that praying in the Spirit is praying with the help of the Spirit and with the guidance of the Spirit, we pray for things He leads us to pray for and not what I want. I remember Romans 8 :26 being explained to me. "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” We cannot pray effectively without the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is recently that I have seen this rise in praying in tongues and I do not believe it to be biblical. I started to believe that I should pray in tongues as my 'prayer language' but in searching the scriptures recognise this doesn't line up with scripture.

Amen brother! Thanks for this. My wife and I are looking to visit another church, and they are adamant about tongues being the evidence of being spirit filled..

I appreciate you pointing this out Corey. I was a member of a word of faith church years ago and left after bringing up these same things regarding whether or not these “tongues” were actually scriptural.

Thank you for this I have several charismatic coworkers that always miss interpret the Bible even when I show them scripture, they still say it says something else I Even told them that speaking in tongues was known languages in the Bible and showed them scripture they still denied I prayed for them.🙏

It is simply that some are given that gift and some are not, it is to edify oneself, and the other to edify The church/others, which is better! Others prophesy, etc. But the greatest one of them all is LOVE!!! So the ones who do speak in tongues, good. If you don’t good!

Just because it is used once, does not make it insignificant. Tongues is praying in the Spirit. Others find it a mystery because they can't understand it. This is biblical

I pray in the spirit using ENGLISH that the ENGLISH speaking congregation may be blessed and edified.
Many misinterpret praying in the spirit as using an unknown language or angles language, they are wrong.
