Vienna-Budapest: train cancelled due to weather
Budapest-Kyiv: train still runs despite literal war

Here is an alternative jounrey, also using just three trains and also taking three days:

It also begins from Paris Gare de l'Est station, but instead you would board the recently launched ICE train bound for Berlin departing at 9:55. Arriving in Berlin you would take another train the next day bound for Warsaw. A direct train to Kyiv also departs from that city in early afternoon (16:49). You would arrive to Warsaw at 11:16 if you took the very first train from Berlin to Warsaw at 5:51. There are still two additonal trains at 7:51 and 9:51 respectfully which would fit in the gap before the Warsaw-Kyiv train departs (travel from Berlin to Warsaw by train takes around 5 hours and 30 minutes). You would arrive to Kyiv at 9:45 (considering no delays take place).

I visiited Ukraine by train for almost two weeks in the summer this year. In spite of the war, the trains were running on time. I was in a sleeper car for each leg of the trip, and while the rolling stock wasn't as nice as the cars that they use on the international routes, their was an attendant to serve coffee, tea and even snacks!

At 08:30 what you saw there wasn't the Riedbahn but rather the Approach to the South Entrance of the new Rastatt Tunnel (the one where the Tunnel collapsed a few years back causing major Chaos). They are busy currently laying the Tracks from the "Abzweig Rastatt Süd", which was rebuilt last Year during Summer in 4 Weeks to allow the Highspeed Trains avoid the old "Rheintalbahn" completly.

Back in 2019 i travelled to Odessa from the UK by rail. It was a great journey, so much so, we got back on the train at the end of our holiday and compleated the return journey.
I do miss the Russian Railways Paris Est to Moscow via Minsk, I used that train in 2016 and 2019.

That’s quite cheap for all that travel thibault, I’d be apprehensive about going to Kiev but good for Ukraine and the other countries for keeping the services running, great post thibault

Quite the adventure, experiencing different railways and countries. The price was unbelievably low, as we are used to exorbitant sleeping car fares in North America. As always when watching your videos, I envy Europeans for their vast and frequent train service.

Nice ride. As a tall person I also prefer the ICE over the TGV. 😅
And btw the Riedbahn is further north between Mannheim and Frankfurt.
