Will has said that he LOVED being on star trek and the cast treated him with great respect and camaraderie. They were his surrogate family. Apparently he'd even go in early to walk the sets. So that means the made up but beautiful world of star trek helped a real boy get through that. Can you imagine? You're essentially being pimped out by your PARENTS, for god's sake! I can't imagine what that must feel like. And a show that is about envisioning a kinder, gentler world where everyone matters simply because they exist is what really saved him. That's beautiful.

The worst betrayel that anyone can suffer is your own parents betraying you. Whether its physical, emotional, or financial. Its a core trust that is broken and for the child to be able to build trust with anyone after that is very difficult. Wil was very fortunate that he was able to find a loving family in the Star Trek cast.
