I was just told a true story from a friend's 89 year old uncle, and his friend had bought land for a hunting camp, and years later, a company offered him $800, 000 and this was in the 70s, but he got greedy, and the company acquired land across the street, and his land never increased in value during his lifetime.
Be careful about these things.

Finally a story where the people get compensated for their property by a company instead of getting legal threats

Sometimes this does backfire. I remember this city where there was a small farm house surrounded by large corporate buildings because the owner wouldn’t sell for less than something like $10 million. The corporation refused and just built up around them

Buying a mansion to retire in is crazy. Most people want to downsize😂 going to spent a lot of money on housekeepers and gardeners.

Buying a mansion for retirement is the dumbest plan ever because of the costs it saddles you with.

"What do you do for your retirement?"
"Cleaning, mostly cleaning."

They could have asked for tens of millions, but they settled for 1.7M to buy a home, pretty wholesome ngl

They won but the stupid thing is buying a bigger house than before for just two people. The upkeep will hurt them

In this economy, $1.7M is market value.

This is a great story. It also reveals how posters add things to generate comments. Mansion? Please. They bought 50 acres that they built a 4200 sf home, and put in a fully stocked fish pond. He is highly successful with his accounting and furniture business. The hate in the comments with what they do with their $ is atypical of the bait the poster put at the end.

That house doesn’t look tiny, it looks like a regular middle class home.

Retiring in a mansion is the worst retirement plan ever

I know Donnie and Kathy. They had lived in that house for years. Donnie is a successful businessman and certainly did not need the money. Aside from being a CPA, he also operated a furniture shop behind his house. Kathy was a school teacher. They did not "buy" a mansion. They bought vacant farmland, built a house (which included office space for his accounting business). He continues to work as an accountant and operate his furniture shop. He is successful because he is intelligent, hardworking and certainly one of the most God fearing people I have ever met.

They did the most idiotic thing possible, the property taxes in NC are crazy, used to live there for many years. Paid 10k in property taxes a yeaar for my million dollar property. They could have just bought another small house and put the rest of their money in savings and retired comfortably.

1.7 million for a mansion? Jeez, these days 1.7 million gets you a townhouse in an outer suburb
