How Intelligent Were Neanderthals? Modern Human vs Neanderthals. Long represented as knuckle-dragging brutes, recent research has begun to establish an image of Neanderthals as intellectual humans who created art, played the flute, buried their dead, and wore feathers and eagle talons. Indeed, The brains of Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens were very similar in volume—roughly 90 cubic inches. But that doesn't imply they were equal. Nevertheless, One tangible fact is that wherever homo sapiens migrated, they essentially outcompeted other human species in hunting prowess. Some scientists deny the claim that Neanderthals practiced art, and there are few examples, including one discovered in the back of Gorham's Cave in Gibraltar. However, Did Neanderthals' relative lack of artistic abilities contribute to their extinction? According to new study, While the dubious artistic prowess of our prehistoric cousins may not appear to be insignificant, new research has discovered that it is directly tied to their less advanced hunting ability, which may eventually explain why they went extinct. So What caused the difference in abilities between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals? There is almost minimal evidence for neanderthal art, and the few disputed specimens are mostly primitive straight lines with no identifiable images. Scientists now believe this simplicity is linked to a lack of hand-eye coordination, as a result of their diet of slow-moving prey.

It is an interesting theory, but now there are studies that say that cave art was also created by by Neanderthals (and jewelry). . Add to that the spears that we thought were too heavy to be used for anything except for thrusting, were actually quite throwable by one with the upper body strength of a Neanderthal.
It's good to correlate information and studies. the more information we have, the better conclusion we can draw.
Thanks again.

Brain morphology does not necessarily predict function. Corvids and cephalopods have a lot of high level mental functions and they are wired completely differently. Also the brain is quite plastic, after brain damage, parts of the brain can compensate by performing new functions.

I hope we will learn more about such questions when frozen Neanderthals are discovered next to frozen mammoths in Siberia.

Highly compelling video. I'll take issue with the assumed connection between cave painting and spear chucking: Here goes: I've watched pets dream complex chases, seen videos of a variety of animals express a range of emotions but NEVER have I seen an animal know how to wait a minute or an hour or even a day. Most small towns in Europe still have a bell and clock tower that mark out the hours of the day. I posit that a sense of time, integral to the ability to reason and to coordinate the hunt or the office is the defining characteristic of Sapience Sapience's "big round brain".

I am sure that among modern humans the persons who are capable to translate the internal imagination to hand coordination just a fraction of 1% or below. It is easy to test. So, population of neanderthals were very low, so if they still were capable to make drawings or pictures means they were genius as community. From other hands, we know that ships, elephants and pigs are able to make a picture, but we don't know what they imagine in their brain to translate to their pictures.

They were as smart as us. Because they are us.

Rather than hand eye coordination, I was wondering about Neanderthal brain development along social lines. What if Neanderthals were generally more autistic then modern humans? It might not have been a problem with their low population levels. But they would tend to be less innovative maybe?

Neanderthals were great sculptors, they sculpted in ice.

This was a particularly interesting episode. One has always 'thot that brain shape was traditionally overlooked by anthropologists in assessing the differences between N. Sapiens and H. Sapiens Sapiens.. My own understanding was that the behavioral and cognitive differences between the species centered on the frontal cerebral cortex. Here, however, it is asserted that the parietal lobe and cerebellum are what is responsible. I've learned something new. Warmest compliments. Thank you. :)

I find many of these conclusions hard to accept. We have a couple of dozen partial skulls assumed to be from Neanderthals and all of these assumptions are based on them. I am not convinced that we have different species here, if they can interbreed aren't they of the same base species?

i kinda doubt the globularization hypothesis... neanderthals made tools comparable to those of amh. knapping these tools requires the same visualization abilites in neanderthals it would in amh.

I always enjoy your videos but could you do some videos other than praising Neanderthals for their intelligence? Do you have any Homo Erectus or Homo Habilis or Homo Antecessor videos on deck?

All of a sudden a cataclysmic event occurs. Destroys most of the works of civilization. 100, 000 years from now an archeologist unearths a Picasso…

There was hardly any pure neanderthals left when modern humans came.

They were the same as Homo sapiens according to Gibraltar archeologists: no one was superior or inferior than the other

To say that Neanderthals were less advanced hunters is preposterous! They were master hunters.
