Geostrophic Wind and Geostrophic Balance

Geostrophic approximation and geostrophic wind relation is derived by scaling horizontal momentum equations (Navier-Stokes equations). The video also shows a few conceptual examples of geostrophic winds in the case of meridional pressure gradients, zonal pressure gradients, variable pressure gradients (all in the Northern Hemisphere) as well as pressure gradients in the Southern Hemisphere. A demonstration of geostrophic wind balance is also provided by using real synoptic maps over Canada and Europe.
