5 Potential Outcomes Of Journal Peer Review || The 2 Step Peer Review Process Welcome To My Channel Navigating Academia
Hello There!👋
Navigating Academia is your leading source for professional guidance on how to advance your career in academia. Hosted by internationally-renowned Cambridge and UPenn faculty member, Dr. Jay Phoenix Singh, the series provides practical advice for tackling the field’s biggest challenges.
In this episode, Dr. Singh discusses 5 potential outcomes when you decide to take the plunge and submit your article to a peer-reviewed academic journal.
Peer review is designed to assess the validity, quality, and often the originality of articles for publication. Its ultimate purpose is to maintain the integrity of science by filtering out invalid or poor-quality articles.
From a publisher’s perspective, peer review functions as a filter for content, directing better quality articles to better quality journals and so creating journal brands.
This can be broken down into 2-step peer-review processes:
Step 1: When you initially submit your article, it's going to go to the editor of the academic journal. The editor will basically do a pretty rapid screening of it to determine if your article is a general fit for their journal or not.
Step 2: After the editor has had a chance to review it, they will give it to an associate editor for the journal. The associate editor will then assign peer reviewers. These are usually folks on that journal's editorial board. However, if those people either don't have the time or the expertise that's very unique to your piece, they will send it out for review to people who are considered experts in your field. The peer review process starts. The peer reviewer will be expected to read it in detail and provide you with comprehensive comments.
1. The publication accepts your journal article with NO revisions
2. The publications accept your journal article with MINOR revisions
3. The publication accepts your journal article with MAJOR revisions
4. You are asked to revise and resubmit your journal article
5. The publication rejects your journal article
