This is a discretionary call made or not made by the ref. The highlight that is shown at the end, I could see being called a travel for passing to one’s self and may not be considered a shot. You are correct in saying there is no rule for rebounding your own air ball though. It just comes down to wether the referee deems it to be a pass to one’s self or not.

Pickup and 21 play by NBA rules. So that would be a travel. Leagues and other places perfectly okay. Play until the refs blows the whistle.

I think you can do it only if you catch the ball and release it in mid air (as shown in the clip in the end), otherwise it’s not legal.

Looked it up. Only in NBA is it a travel. NCAA and high school it's a ref's judgment call if deemed an intentional shot attempt.
