It's amazing how cheap this boss is. Fromsoft usually kills it with boss design but every once in a while there's something like this that can one shot you when you have him at 10% health

I've almost killed this guy half a dozen times, and every single time, he uses lightning to 1 shot me. I absolutely hate all the 1 shot deaths on this game, but this boss is the worst for it. It's virtually impossible to dodge.

Tip: When the second phase starts, you actually wanna stay on his weapon side, because he doesn't sweep anymore. You also bait him in doing a smash, which is easy enough to dodge. But more importantly you prevent him from doing his lightning smite.

Here's another method: use Rotten Stray, then get some free hits in the beginning, let him chase you so your dog can inflict that rotten effect, then run away from him until he goes back guarding the gate, and the effect is still there. Good luck, fellow tarnished.

I honestly think the shield charge lightning attack is one of the hardest abilities to dodge ingame.

Learn poison mist incantation. Requires 12 faith. Sneak behind him and poison him. He doesn't move. Easiest method to defeat this boss and can be done so early in game. Will defo get patched.

AOE lightning isn't that bad. The homing lightning thing I think is much harder I think. With the AOE, depending on where you stand/luck you can actually keep attacking him during the entire animation and he just stands there doing nothing

When he starts to do his insta one hit lightning cheese, just rush him and make sure youre hugging his shield. You somehow dont get hit and you can get atleast 3 hits (meteoric katana for me)

Sticking to the shield side really helped, got it from your video. If you stick to the shield side it's easier to get hits in, and get away when he attacks with only Torrent taking damage. I actually stayed on that side longer than you would think you could and hammered away before having to move away.

If you’re using a melee build there is another cheese for phase 2 as well - you can kind of see it in action in the video. If you are on Torrent and keep riding at the horses right side rear (hammer side) in phase 2 he will keep jumping away from you. This happens a few times in the video, but he retreats. If you keep pushing the sentinel in a circle he will keep jumping away and you and hit him easily non stop without him attacking at all. I haven’t tried this multiple times, but I was able to beat him my second time on accident because of this.

Just beat him on my faith build! First phase is relatively easy, just avoid his attacks with torrent then retaliate with a swing of your weapon of choice. Second phase I decided to abandon the horse, so that I can dodge the insta kill lightning bolt he preforms. The strategy I used was firing a black flame incantation at him after he does his instant lightning bolt move. You can tell when the lightning comes down when he shifts his shield down. Another opening for shooting him with a flame is directly after he does his overhead swing upon charging at you. You can just about sneak in a single fireball, but you have to roll out of the way immediately after, or you will most likely get fireballed to the forehead. Doing this along with sneaking in a few hits with my winged scythe finished the job. Just watch out for his AOE lightning slam, as well as his large swing that summons a wave of lightning, and you should do great. Just posting this for anyone struggling like i did 😌
