Today's video tries to answer the age old saying in music production "The Best EQ is no EQ". Is that complete nonsense, or is there actually something to it?

So true! Tip for live-sound, run a pair of hi/lo mikes in a acoustic piano into a stereochannel (same eq for both) and you will be amazed how more natural and coherent the piano sounds. For tracking, I allow myself a modest Hpf (12dB slope) and a 3-band parametric eq, if anything needs more then a 4dB cut or boost, there's something wrong with the source or mike setup, wrong mike or faulty position.

I heard Warren Huart echo the same sentiment. I've learn to level the mix, then use a little bit of eq. Since that advice, my mixes have sounded better with little processing.

Most of my sources are VSTs and I do use EQ for sound design. If I have interference between sounds I try ducking first. If that takes too much away I automate EQ to kick in where it's needed. Of all the great soft synths, effects, and plugins, I've never found anything as powerful as automation for bringing extra dimensions to the music. Thanks for these excellent videos, your advice makes all the difference to my skill and enjoyment of my hobby.
