I was in the audience for this. When he asks us here at 8:40 to confirm whether or not he told us what to draw and that it's entirely "from our minds", it's only slightly true. He kind of did tell us what to draw. Before going into the studio, we were ushered in small groups into a room with him where he basically showed us a flipbook with a bunch of these weird shapes. He asked us to remember the one that jumped out at us the most when he flipped through the pages of the book very fast and to not share with each other which one we chose because we'd be asked to draw it later during the taping. I'm guessing we all noticed the star in the circle symbol because it was repeated the most inside the book or because he strategically flipped the pages so that it would pause on that page a second longer. He very likely showed James the same book backstage, which is why he drew it too. The part about the other symbols spelling out the word "STAR" was a surprise to us, though. But kind of a reach if you ask me. I think with a bit of reverse psychology and clever writing, this guy just kinda convinces you it was all a coincidence. The ironic thing about seeing this in person was realizing months later that this was the second time I'd watched one of his "illusions". I'd seen him on a different talk show four years prior, but didn't realize it was the same guy lol. He may be an illusionist, but he barely leaves an impression. And no, none of us were paid or plants. We didn't ask to be involved in this lmaooo

He effectively eliminates like 8 of the 10 most common images drawn. Leaving you with the Star. Most will draw a circle. He made everyone draw a circle as a means to narrow the choices.
