Afghanistan's Geography is Awful. Why Do 40M Live There?

Just by taking a look at a map of Afghanistan, you can see that its geography is awful. It’s rugged, mountainous, landlocked, and has a harsh arid climate. It seems like barely anyone would live here, yet, 44 million people do. That makes it bigger than Ukraine, a similarly sized country with extremely fertile land perfect for human settlement. So, why do so many people live in what seems to be such an awful place?

Nice video. Thank you for posting it! It wouldn't have hurt to go for 3 to 5 minutes unless, you intend to use this as a short. I agree, though, 20 minuts would have been a bit much if you were just hammering on the same nail.

Also, look at your subscriber count at 116k! That's loads bigger than the population of the entire county (64, 500ish) that I live in in the middle of Michigan. That's very impressive! Congratulations!

Many countries simply have their red parts be underpopulated areas, but in the case of Afghanistan its not underpopulated, its dangerous as hell

I remember many Afganis don't remember their own birthdays due to poor record keeping due to being at war for so long. I wonder how much of the population numbers are bloated for the same reason of poor record keeping, if any

The geopolitical curse due to its geography has destroyed Afghanistan and made the lives of afghanis a living hell.

They can make large artificial river across eastern Iranian borders with Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, reducing their landmass equally, to connect Caspian Sea to Indian Ocean. That means countries like Kazahkstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Afganistan won't longer be landlocked and Caspian Sea will have same status in Asia as Black Sea in Europe. Protecting Caspian sea from drainage.

Even crazier project, but secondary, would to make some Caucaus rivers much larger so they can be connected to Black Sea. Project will be also huge for both Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The map you made is really inacurrate most afghans actually live in red

The view at 0:48 is definitely not Afghanistan, it's more like Switzerland. I wish to be proven wrong, but there's no way such a well-built settlement in snowy mountains exists in Afghanistan.
