Protests Erupt In France Over Far-Right Presidential Candidate

"Tens of thousands of anti-far right protesters marched across France on Saturday as opponents of presidential candidate Marine Le Pen seek to form a united front to prevent her from winning ahead of next weekend's presidential run-off.

Macron, a centrist, defeated Le Pen in 2017 when voters rallied behind him in the run-off to keep her far-right party out of power.

This year, the first round of voting last Sunday set up the same battle, but Macron is facing a much tougher challenge.

In central Paris, thousands of people gathered chanting anti-far right slogans and warning of democratic upheaval if Le Pen were to win.

Banners read: "Against the far-right. For justice and equality, not Le Pen at the Elysee," and "Better a vote that stinks than a vote that kills."

The protesters made it overwhelmingly clear that in saying "no to the far-right" they don't like Emmanuel Macron either — but will reluctantly hold their noses and vote for the current president in order to defeat the far-right Le Pen."

We're basically stuck with nitrogen-infused Tequila (Macron) and vitriol-flavor Schnapps (Le Pen). Both are unbearable, but we're forced to drink one of them...

The fact someone like Le Pen is so close to power shows the dislike of Macron by the French public. Here, in the UK, British politicians are appealing to the French people, under no circumstances vote for Le Pen.

Choosing between extremism, and the lesser evil is not sustainable. Political parties need to be abolished. Let the candidates fend for themselves.

Hey French here. It's similar to what happened to the US but there's a big difference:
We don't have a 2 part system. There were over 10 candidates from diverse parties in the first tour.

Also Macron is similar to Biden because of this similarities but it ends there:

Macron was in the previous government: the socialist party he was the minister of Economy. The same party that gave LGBTQ+ the right to marry and give their blood.

Also... I love you TYT but Macron actually did good things for the people: he suppressed several taxes. For the people and for the businesses. During the pandemic lockdown he helped business not to close and firing people by providing the equivalent of your stimulus check. The economy was boosted at the end of the lockdowns. A many people were able to find a new job quickly, he extended unemployment pays during the lock down. My sister was allowed to create her own business thanks to that. She own a property now. I was able to find a new job and I am paid even better than before.

Also Jean Luc Melanchon is not like Bernie Sanders. Bernie Sanders fight for rights we already have in here in France, like M4A. And his policies are actually closer to Macron's than Melanchon.
The latest want to raise minimal wages (that already are calculated relative to inflation). But the business can't pay the already expensive employees.
Also Melanchon is an actual oligarch who wants to change France constitution. He had good social policies on the paper. But in the end, the rich and the middle class will pay for the others. France is not like the US: we already have a lot of taxes for everything. Because of our social policies. And I don't mind paying tax for that. A lot of people don't understand that aides don't come from nothing.

People are not happy of Macron policies because our countries have 3 major parties. The Center (Macron's party), the far right(with Le Pen), the far left(Melanchon), plus the ecologists.
It's not as simple as the US where you are either left or right.

I see what you did there. You're one of my major news sources, so it was a fair play.

If only Americans were this riled up against Drumpf back in 2016, but the Democrats blew their chance by backing Hillary Clinton, instead of Bernie Sanders. 😭

Why is politics always the choice between bad and worse? Why are people crammed into a no way out corner?

I didn't want Biden as president in the first place, because I knew what we were getting but I voted for him because I actually have morals and care about the future of this country. If he runs again, I will be left with no other choice but to vote for him a second time, for the same reasons. It sickens me that America has come to this!

There was no surprise when Macron got elected. He made his career in the corporate banking world at Rotschild (it is the equivalence in France of Goldman Sachs). He was in the fusion & acquisition sector. Then when he was appointed as Minister of Economy during Francois Hollande's era, he implemented neoliberal reforms & he had close ties with the corporate lobby groups. He ran as an outsider but he really was an insider. The only "outsider" part of his candidacy is the fact that he founded his own political party and crushed the traditionnal parties.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon was very close. But I don't know if he could have won against Le Pen because many are scared of his political platform. He's on the left of Bernie Sanders and often described as a radical.I wish it was him but Macron is the typical "moderate" candidate that inspires trust among the average voter.
