A Knock-Down Workbench that Goes Anywhere!

This Knock-Down Workbench was featured on the Woodsmith Shop, E1201: Setting Up Shop. Phil takes a trip down memory lane to show off his first workbench.

Turn a single sheet of plywood and a few pieces of hardware into a portable workbench that “knocks down” for compact storage... It's a bench in a box. No, it’s not a new magic act. This bench provides a solid, stable worksurface like you’d expect from a bench. (There’s even a tool tray underneath.) Then, once a job is completed, the bench can be “knocked down” and stored in a compact box that you carry like a suitcase. The best thing about this knock-down design is it makes it easy to take the bench out to the driveway or backyard, or to a friend’s house to help on a project. No matter where you’re working, setting up the bench only takes a minute.

I built one of these years ago in Mexico and added an extra top for a router. It’s seen a lot of projects over the years.👍✌️😊🙏🏼

My first workbench was a curbside dresser with a stretched 2x4 base a piece of plywood on the top. My second one was an old folding banquet table, again a curbside find. My current bench is my favorite and will probably be my last, two opposing desks with horizontal support between them and a double layer of plywood on top. Yep....curbside :-)

Nice. I have a lifetime of carpentry and woodworking and seen and used so many work benches and tool boxes. I have used larger, similar versions for job site work, but I like this for its portability and storability. Think I'll make one (with a couple tweaks of course). It will serve an immediate need. Glad I found you. Thanks

Good advice to those just trying to get started, or just don’t have loads of space.

My son in law has a garage built for the Model A era. Space is a premium. Will surprise him with this gem.
Thanks Phil. I am a long time viewer of Woodsmith on PBS Wisconsin.

Because of the important message, this is one of my favourite woodworking videos ever.

Great delivery and awesome ideas. I will need portable work benches when I go on the road in my converted school bus. Thanks for video.

Phil wins! The first woodworker I have seen on YouTube to get the word ‘festooned’ in. Outstanding.

2:20- 2:40. Wise advice. In many circumstances.

That looks great. Since I have a neck and back problem(Ft Benning 87) I would need it higher and maybe a little narrower, but paired. Looks like it would be easy for me to customize to my needs and with wheels. I love wood working/carpentry. Just hard and painful to do with one hand on a cane. But you never give up no matter how much it hurts!

Brilliant!! Now to figure out how to engineer one that opens like a scissor-lift!

D'oh! I've been using the F clamps upside down this whole time. *facepalm*

That is a very clever little bench!

When searching for a project that you just heard about, and didn't see yourself how they spelled everything, you might have problems finding it in the search window. For example: they have a plan for a knock-down workstation. And if you don't spell it with the hyphen, it won't find it.
