Tim Mosso's Take on Omega Speedmaster And Rolex Daytona Anniversary Watches

The best watches sometimes are special editions to mark unique occasions. And luxury watch brands LOVE to mark anniversaries with special edition watches. Tonight, Tim Mosso discusses the best-ever special edition watches from Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, and more. If you want a platinum Rolex Daytona, an Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy, or a Patek Philippe World Time Moonphase, this episode is for you!

In 1963, Rolex created the Cosmograph Daytona chronograph. In 2013, Rolex launched the spectacular platinum Daytona 116506 to mark 50 years of the world's most famous chronograph watch. While speculation ran rampant before the debut of the anniversary Daytona, few watch collectors correctly guessed that the 50th anniversary Daytona would be a platinum watch. But it was! The reference 116506 was the first series-produced platinum Rolex Daytona, and it was awe-inspiring.

First, there was the platinum Daytona's spectacular weight of almost 300 grams; it was astounding to hold or wear on the wrist. $75,800 in 2013 money bought a lot of platinum Rolex. Second, the color combination of this chronograph was a winner. Ultra white platinum contrasted strongly with the chocolate ceramic of the bezel and chronograph registers. Rolex employed its long-running "ice blue" dial color reserved exclusively for platinum Rolex watches. No sooner had the platinum Daytona arrived than Rolex began offering even more exclusive variants.

Rolex offered two gem-set versions of the platinum Daytona; one had baguette diamonds for hour indices, and one featured a fully gem-set bezel. Watch collectors seeking even greater exclusivity could attempt to obtain a special platinum Rolex chronograph with Easter Arabic numerals on its dial.

The 2015 Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo XIII 45th Anniversary limited edition has an unwieldy name. Most watch collectors simply call Omega Speedmaster reference 311.32.42.30.04.003 the "Silver Snoopy II." Omega released the first Apollo XIII anniversary model in 2004, but it drew little enduring interest because the edition was not particularly special. The 2015 Speedmaster Silver Snoopy changed all of that.

First, the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Silver Snoopy II was a limited edition of 1,970. In hindsight, Omega could have built and sold ten times that amount. The Silver Snoopy dial was a dramatic black-and-white affair with immense use of super luminova, the image of Snoopy himself, a thought bubble featuring a phrase from the Apollo 13 movie, and a set of comic frames referencing both the Peanuts comics and the use of Omega's Speedmaster to recover the damaged NASA spacecraft. The fourteen frames on the dial represented a 14-second maneuver timed with an Omega Speedmaster during the mission.

On its caseback, the Omega Silver Snoopy II included a solid sterling silver sculpture of Snoopy cut by hand. The image is of the Snoopy badge created specifically but Charles Schulz for NASA's "Silver Snoopy" Award. The silver medallion sits on a fired enamel disc of blue aventurine glass and glittering mineral deposits that simulate the stars. Few luxury watch limited editions are more sought than the Omega Speedmaster "Silver Snoopy 2."

All of this plus watch collector wrist shots will be featured in this episode of "Watches Tonight!"

12:40 Omega has a green Seamaster since ‘50s. Hard to say it is a Sub imitator.

Great show, thanks Tim. I didn't catch it live unfortunately; I never was a night owl. As for our Skoda, it's a wreck but who cares as long as you have a nice watch on, right?!

Another brilliant show Tim. Great to know that the channel is not monetised. Also thanks for the support for the UK. Never in the field of human politics was so much destroyed by so few so quickly 🤷‍♂️

I expect a very good future for four anniversaries, the SD43, the Polar anniversary and both of the Apollo 11 50th anniversaries, moonshine gold and the steel 6969. They just might take some time to be super hot fire 🔥.

Experiencing a panoply disappointed emotions because there was no Halloween show. A watch materials segment (e.g. titanium vs steel) would be some consolation.

Hey Tim, just looked at Tom Cruise's Rolex President Day Date, 18karat, in the movie Rain Man... would be great to have a show featuring Rolex in the movies, beyond Bond. No one look. Trivia question: How much did Cruise's character sell his for in the movie in 1988? If you know answer post IK (I know) only, please!

At that price I'd probably go Patek.

I was asking a friend why are used Rolex watches more than brand new ones, he told me you just about cannot find a new Rolex. Is this true? Why are the used Rolex watches more??

Do you think the price of the latest Snoopy would keep dropping under $22K so I could grab one. I just live it and its a grail anniversary piece.
