Damn, there’s a pretty steep power gap between ‘allergic to sunlight’ and ‘RESIST ALL DAMAGE’

Forgot about astral elf, I’d put them under eladrin, since they can also teleport though without the added benefits. And the cantrips don’t make up for the gap in power.

15 elf races and they still can’t diggy diggy hole like us dwarfs!

Crazy that there’s so much power creep in a non-competitive game

We all know Half Elf is the best elf. Don't try to trick us.

Dark elf is more of a "situational" elf race. Sunlight Sensitivity only affects attack rolls and perception checks relying on sight, so a caster with a focus on saving throw spells is unaffected in combat (outside of the perception part). Its also less of an issue than you think as combat isn't typically done in the broad daylight unless you're getting ambushed on the way to your destination as your destination usually is not going to be in DIRECT sunlight (dungeon, cave, ruins, city building, etc.)

Also, if its an Underdark campaign, that significant boost to Darkvision is pretty good.

This is cool. And Jesus there’s a lot of elf races in DnD.

I had a shadar-kai that died and was resurrected as a drow. I had the cleric banish me to the shadow fell so I could beg the Raven Queen to give me her blessing again. Ended up being, in my opinion, a shadar-kai as it should have been. I had superior dark vision, sunlight sensitivity and the blessing of the raven queen. I find it ridiculous that a being born in darkness only has regular dark vision and no sunlight sensitivity (since there isn't a sun in the Shadowfell).

To be quite fair, I don't think D&D has too many elf subraces, I think it has not enough subraces of the other main races. There are really only two kinds of human. Terrain doesn't really matter, you're either more skilled or more well-rounded. There are only three kinds of gnome as well, terrain matters some, but apparently gnomes can only be from forests, hills, or the underdark? Or, marked by a dragon I guess. Same goes for human on that one. Dragonborn have a version for each heritage of dragon, which is nice, but I think there need to be more options for the other races in general, not fewer elves. Character customization is nice.

I play a drow druid and I found this pair of magic goggles that give me advantage to everything eye related, so I managed to balance the sunlight sensitivity.

Something to think about: elves being one of the species with a long lifespan they should have the least subspecies. Since it takes a long time to have children so there is less D&D mutation.

Aarokacras, Tortles, Goblins should be the races with most subclasses since they are the most short-lived, so there are more chances of mutation.

Loved your videos ! My little brother is really into DnD, and your vids are always helping him become a better player!

I think it was a DndShorts video where it was asked “Why do elves have the most racial diversity when they’re one of the races with the longest lifespan?” Makes you wonder, but their ability to adapt basically anywhere rivals that of humans surprisingly.

To clarify, there’s only 7 that I know of in 5e. High, Wood, Dark, Sea, Eladrin, Shadar Kai and Astral

I love the Eladrin especially since in the new Mordenkainen's book instead of 4 sometimes helpful sometimes useless weapon profs(which thanks to Tasha's you can customize into it's own brand of incredibly funny tool prof spam) they get only 2 but you can swap them out each day meaning you have a lot of versatility both in flavor and mechanics which is only further compounded by the seasons changed the fey step which sidenote also has the benefit of not being a spell so you can run in throw out a big melee spell like inflict wounds or whatever, and then fey step out while potentially still using the fey step's utility on top of all that

I play an eladrin paladin, the misty step for this guy is a lifesaver. Once I had to use it to rush over to our Barbarian who was possessed and attacking our only non-poscessed spell caster so I could act as a comfy meat shield between them. Not the smartest idea but it worked

Im playing a shadar kai way of the shadow monk. The different ways I can teleport to minimise damage and maximise crits is my favourite part of this style. It's a must to get some kind of light or flame cantrip to control the direction of shadows when using this class.
