The assumption that living abroad always aids language learning is incorrect, I lived in the Netherlands for a year and wasn't motivated enough to learn Dutch so naturally I gravitated towards the international community there, isolating myself from experiences to learn Dutch with Native speakers.

I was wondering if Nate would be one of these videos! Love how much passion he has for languages and how much fun he has with it

So glad I found your channel. It's really motivated to continue with my Spanish. I'm ten months in in for the first 5 months i almost quit 6 times because I wasn't understanding people. Then around 6 months one day i was watching a video on a YouTube channel called Hola Spanish with una profesora de Argentina que enseña español. And I just suddenly understood 98% of what she was saying, i don't know, it just clicked out of nowhere! I also purchased your short stories in Spanish book. Quiet entertaining and helpful! Thank you Olly

Hunger, hunger, hunger. When you hear him talk about his language journey it just oozes out of him.

I agree on that point you made, about not having to live abroad where your target language is spoken in order to learn it, because I reached a very high level of English, here at home, in Algeria, before I even learned what A1 A2 B1 levels are XD

I love these real stories Olly. it is so true. As a young Australian going on a working holiday I thought I would learn German when I got to Europe. I did buy a book, and thought reading it along with some effort would be enough. I learnt a little at work and then did an intensive German course for 2 months and worked every night in German. I was far from fluent though. I realise now that I was just beginning to get to where I would have really had to put in the hard work. Years later, I didn't even try to prepare my children before we moved to Switzerland even though I had previously struggled myself !?! 😮 I just assumed they would learn German in school, kids are supposed to be sponges I had been told. That was not fair in hindsight. I was kind enough 😉 to help them learn some French before we spent some time camping there as I've since gone through the struggles of really learning languages myself and I know how dedicated most people need to be to learn a foreign language.

I’ve learned English and Spanish (intermediate) without leaving Brazil

Two school years to get to a good level at a foreign language is relatively fast in my opinion. In Germany, I had English class for seven years and after that you were supposed to be at B2.

Great story! Wish I would have done this 30 years ago in western Kansas.

My Spanish language learning story is similar. Except it was more than 30 years ago, before the internet and modern resources. My father would give me $5 per day for lunch in Nevada. Instead of using the money for food, I saved it and bought a FSI (Foreign Service Institute) Spanish language course. I'd learn concept, then go to school and practice it with native speakers. For example, if I was studying the present subjunctive at home, I'd create as many opportunities to use that tense as possible until it was cemented in my head and came naturally. I was fluent by the time I was 17 years old. I realized that I had trouble understanding Caribbean Spanish speakers, so I started watching the Cristina Show. She was a Cuban talk show host based in Miami. At 18 or 19, I moved to Puerto Rico and then to Cuba. Many years later, I used the same method to teach myself Portuguese then moved to Brazil for 7 years.

Yes very interesting. Sounds like a familiar breakdown.
Any information around about how you mitigated the dizziness?
