Coronavirus outbreak: How many people can possibly get COVID-19?

The World Health Organization has officially declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. What began as a handful of cases in Wuhan, China nearly two and a half months ago has evolved into a global outbreak, with the virus spreading to over 100 countries with over 100,000 cases and 4,000 deaths confirmed. But how many people could actually get infected by the novel coronavirus disease?

Epidemiology professor Marc Lipsitch from Harvard University made headlines after he projected 40 - 70% of the world’s adult population could be infected by COVID-19.

I have chronic asthma and I isolate myself at home but what I fear most is that my 14 year old daughter will get infected and bring it home. I know she will be okay, but I will probably die. We have a spare apartment in the house and I am preparing to move into it and not have any contact with my family for 30 days.

I had something like this hit me in 98. I was in hospital for a month with a pnumonia no specialists could identify. I had lung surgery and was on a ventilator. Drs said whatever it was if I ever caught it again I probably wouldnt survive. So I'm scared to leave my home now!

Poor less than one year old just get infected here in Canada, it is sad that it is because confirmed people left isolated at home. It is really hard, almost impossible to isolate if you have other people in the household.

PS, children may be becoming infected but in a different way than Adults... this happens with some viruses, HIV for instance...

yes the people dying it's really sad but people in the US are acting like this is nothing like it's a normal flu they're acting like we don't have to protect our kids or ourselfs that just because they won't die its ok but this is causing neurological issues this is attacking your heart your liver and God only knows the long-term repercussions of that it's like getting the chickenpox and then later on getting shingles and let's be honest how many of our parents had chickenpox parties because they didn't know the repercussions ...we have no clue and the schools won't shut down they won't let us keep your kids out of school to keep them safe... and saying it's nothing ...not only are we not looking out for ourselves we're not looking out for our next generation....

As a septuagenarian I can only retreat home and *isolate* myself (as well as my significant other) until the crisis subsides. Hopefully my grandchildren won't catch it at school.
