I think this was the scam that got my boyfriend's mom. She has a YouTube video about it from, like, last year? A few of the names she mentioned are consistent with what I could find about this case.

It's absolutely stunning. She's an intelligent woman, but they found a way to speak to her vulnerability and insecurity. It's absolutely disgusting how they preyed on people who were NOT being greedy -- which is how the scammers justify it to themselves. She, like so many others, just wanted to jump on an opportunity. She wanted to be self-sufficient. She wanted to have money to leave for her kids, instead of debt.

She is not greedy, just wanted to have some comfort in an uncertain economy.

She's ok now, but I know a LOT of other victims were not as lucky.
