This video shows examples of various ways waist shaping is incorporated into sweaters, and explains how to do the calculations to add shaping.

SWEATERS FEATURED IN THE VIDEO:
Below are links to my Ravelry project pages for each sweater. If the sweater has a pattern associated with it, you will find a link from the project page to the pattern page.
Two-toned gray cardigan: this was self-designed. There is no pattern.

Two-toned gray vest: this was an adaptation of Eunny Jang's Deep-V Argyle Vest. The original pattern was knit with stranded colorwork in the round, and included steeks. I changed it to flat knitting with seams, and swapped out the stitch pattern, but kept the dimensions of the silhouette, including the waist shaping.

1940s sweater: Harlequin, published in the April 1949 issue of Stitchcraft

Teal sweater I added waist shaping to: Oakledge, by Valerie Hobbs

That is so helpful, Roxy. I'm on the point of adding shape to a shapeless sweater, and your explanation is better than the random (or organic?) ways I have employed in the past! I'm impressed at your timing! Thank you!

Just using this space to let you know how much I appreciate your videos. I’ve started looking through them before/during projects to remind myself what to watch out for/ learn best practices before trying something out.

Thank you so much for these very clear explanations. I couldn't access the pdf sheet on waist shaping though, only your written notes.
I am not surprised you chose to knit the Oakledge Cardigan by Valerie Hobbs, it sure will be great on you with waste shaping.

Roxanne, I'm just wondering: have u ever come across knitting a left/right crossing cable in double knitting??? Maybe u can refer me to design u saw this technique on such as a headband etc. I'm trying to find info regarding this as I want to incorporate a single cable vertical double knit buttonband on to a cardigan.

8:23 around time point 8:20 there is something funny with the editing. Seems like a title misplaced title card that plays.
