Artificial sweeteners are awesome and I've been using them in large amounts for 30 years with no problems or negative effects, plus they helped me quit all added sugar and lose heaps of fat a few years back. Sugar is linked closely to obesity and many diseases so in comparison artificial sweeteners are a no-brainer.

I lost 150 lbs (336-184) using artificial sweeteners along the whole way, and still do. I had very high blood pressure and cholesterol, i no longer do. They’re a great tool for weight loss in my opinion.

Hyman's take represents a MAJOR leap but I think he may be referring to a study that Huberman has talked about on his podcast. The study followed people who habitually consumed artificial sweetener alongside food that raised blood glucose, then later removed the calories and just consumed artificial sweetener in a fasted state. They were found to still experience a release of insulin (along with dopamine) despite not consuming any calories and raising blood glucose. Once again, Hyman is making a huge leap from that to the idea that artificial sweeteners are fattening, and Huberman certainly doesn't present the study that way. He instead positions it as potential evidence that there is some degree of classical conditioning involved in metabolism that is independent from the nutritive content of food, but with the caveat that lots of follow-up is necessary.

Great video, Layne. The trouble as I see it, is that some people aren’t educated enough to know these things are bollocks.
I have seen that exact post on my Facebook wall from a personal trainer trying to ‘educate’ his clients/friends. There were actually some people saying that they’d change back to full sugar as they’d rather eat ‘healthier’. I actually directed them to your Facebook page, but the amount of comments and likes were 5x more from the people that believed the shite. A lot of them looked to be overweight. While that’s no problem, people can be whoever they want to be, these people actually mentioned losing weight. These people that spew this shite deserve to be treated like every other liar out there! Scummy as shit!

Yeah I’m one of those ppl who’ve commented on your diet soda videos that I’ve lost 100 lbs and am still maintaining that loss! I drink little to no diet soda if I’m eating at maintenance but if I’m taking a deficit I like the carbonation and taste of diet soda once or twice a day during the deficit period. I’ve still got 30 lbs to lose and I’ll be happily using diet soda to curb that little bit of hunger between lunch and dinner.
