Papers mentioned in this video
The phytochemical, EGCG, extends lifespan by reducing liver and kidney function damage and improving age-associated inflammation and oxidative stress in healthy rats

Thanks Richard. From the literature it seems that getting higher levels of a broad range of polyphenols is a good general strategy. For example, in following up on Vera Gorbunova's work suggesting benefits from preserving hyaluronic acid I've found that a number of polyphenols inhibit hyaluronidase which is an enzyme that inhibits HA production. We don't have dose response data, but that is also lacking for HA supplements as well. One very interesting thing about EGCG is activation of FOXO3a which has been shown to be relevant in one centenarian study (Germans I believe).

As someone that drinks 3-mugs of green tea per day each 300ml gives me 900ml per day. Excellent providing I’m 60kg (I’m 75kg). Your chart also suggests 20-160mg per serving of Catechins, which is a substantial range. Then there is the issue of strength and brewing time to get the required concentration, cupelled with the time/dose issue, will more be absorbed if smaller cups consumed more regularly than mugs 3-times a day. Hopefully some these questions will get answered with time.

Matcha has 210mg per serving (1 tsp of powder). One to two cups of matcha is consumed regularly by the Japanese so it is safe and effective

Very helpful review, thank you Richard! I used to drink green tea every day but stopped for a while, it's a good timing to start this good habit again!

I used to do 7 teabags of white tea (similar ECGC amounts to green tea) daily. I have moved it to down to 4 teabags. Most substances have a u curve, such that they may be healthful in reasonable amounts but become unhealthy in large amounts. I am not sure anyone knows what the tipping point is. People have had liver damage from too many green tea supplements and one lady was drinking so much tea (like 100 cups) that her bones fused together (skeletal fluorosis) creating irreversible damage

Great review! May be that's why japan is no.2 longevity country. I love green tea as well as green tea cake:-)

Good news as I like everything about green tea, everytime I drink it, it makes me relax as well.

Interesting study. one more of the many that have been made for this purpose. As you very well says, the necessary dose is excessively high, which, practically, makes it unfeasible. To the latter we should add the content of theine present in tea and the problem that it can cause with the absorption of iron, which, for those anemic, with stress or with high blood pressure, could be an element of additional risk.

Very informative as usual. Thanks Richard

So EGCG is activating longevity genes, seem matcha - a type of green tea contain more EGCG than normal green tea.

EGCG causes arrhythmia and palpitations! Threw mine away after experiencing this and did research!!! NIH study available online.

Does matcha tea have higher EGCG concentration and therefore offer a chance to lower the dosage with similar results or it isn´t the case?

Your background looks like a photo I took from chicago skyline and photoshopped. Where did you find it? I think I posted on Flickr.

I wonder if epicatechin is related/has a similar effect. It's already known to increase muscle mass and longevity

why only liver and kidney ? maybe cause they deal w toxic substances in concentrated forms to be excreted?

Is EGCG degraded by digestion? If so might liposomal delivery be more effective while using a lower dosage?

What are the other sources, end of video?

It’s sad that they cut the study short of the amount of time that even the control group was completely dead. This means that lifespan may not have been extended. While still exciting, it can only be added to what is now a mountain of experiments where we were able to extend health span but with questionable or no effect on lifespan itself.
